MICHAEL JOHN MCCUAIG Michael was born in Winnipeg on October 20, 1933. He died peacefully on October 29, 2018. He will be remembered and missed by his wife of almost 64 years, Joan, his children, Alison (Colin), Stuart, Alex (Helen) and Nancy (Thomas), and his grandchildren, Andrea, Ainsley, Quinn and Christiane, as well as his many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Linda, and his brothers, Peter and Donald. Mike worked tirelessly over the years and provided a good life for his family. He was funny, affectionate, a merciless teaser and someone who spoke to everyone as their equal. He was bigger than life, louder than anyone in the room. He was naturally engaging and had the rare gift of putting everyone at ease. Mike spent much time as a volunteer in the many sports in which his children were involved. This lead to him co-chairing a very successful Canadian Figure Skating Championship in Winnipeg. Mike was a lifetime Jets and Bombers fan. He was an avid tennis player and longtime commissioner of the OTTL. In later years he became a keen bridge player. During his life Mike had the good fortune to travel extensively. He loved trips to Florida with Joan and his tours of European battlefields including one with Alex. He enjoyed many ski trips with family and "The Boys". Two other very special trips were to Minneapolis. One with Alison and Colin to watch Andrea and Ainsley play in the world bandy championship and another to watch an NFL game with Stuart. Mike's favourite place was Victoria Beach where at one time he was active as both the Editor of the Victoria Beach Herald and then as President of the Victoria Beach Club. At the lake Mike's preferred activity was working on projects usually involving members of the family. Siding, decks, landscaping, sheds, painting, finishing carpentry, it was rare for the project to be too big for Mike to take on. Under Mike's tutelage, and with Nancy usually as the first assistant, all of the kids, grandkids and spouses were gradually, and occasionally reluctantly, introduced to various power tools as everyone worked to make the cottage what it is today. Nights at 309 were an opportunity to relax (sometimes loudly) with family and friends and enjoy a glass (or two) of wine, a good meal, a good book and possibly a bit of TV.
