Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySYLVIA HURMA (nee PILLIPOW) It is with heavy hearts that Sylvia Hurma peacefully passed away with family by her side on Friday, November 23, 2018, at the age of 82 years. Sylvia will be lovingly remembered by her husband John; children David and Beverly (Darrell) Poolie; and one special granddaughter, Jelena (Emad) Hurma-Uddin of Calgary; her sister Gwen (Bob) Pillipow; nieces and nephews; many dear friends; and her faithful companions Boo and the boys. She was predeceased by her parents Andrew and Nettie Pillipow; her sister Anne; daughter-in-law Jackie; and her furry friend China. Sylvia was born on a farm near Goodeve, Saskatchewan. She met John in Goodeve and they married on November 30, 1952. Shortly after they started their family and moved to Melville in 1959. She worked at St. Paul's Lutheran Nursing Home as a health care aide for a number of years. This is where she obtained her nickname "Shorty" due to her short stature. Sylvia always went above and beyond her patient's expectations whether it be curling hair or simply lending a caring ear. She was known for her diligent work and tireless energy. They moved to Winnipeg in 1996 to be closer to family. They lived at St. Vital Knights Villa where they made many close relationships. Some of her enjoyments were line dancing, fund raising for charity, puzzles, bingo, watching curling and playing cards or simply having morning coffee and chatting with the ladies. Her true passions were going to the lake in Saskatchewan, sitting at the kitchen table while doing her crosswords and watching the birds out the window. Sylvia was a woman of extreme courage and strength. She was caring and compassionate. But one of Sylvia's most amazing qualities was taking such good care of people whether it be her family, friends or patients. She always put others before herself even during the difficult times in her own life. What a special joy Sylvia was and she is now an angel and at peace in heaven. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. An interment will be held at the Melville Municipal Cemetery. Special thanks to the St. Boniface Hospital emergency staff, 5th Floor, for their exceptional care and professionalism. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Sylvia to the charity of one's choice. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550
