CHERYL MARLEEN TANNER (nee STEVEN) It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce the passing of our loved one, Cheryl Marleen Tanner. With her family by her side on December 9, 2018, at Concordia Hospital, Cheryl passed peacefully at the age of 72 years. With love and saddness, Cheryl's family, her husband Jim Tanner, her daughter Shelley Kern (Tim Hannah), and her grandchildren, Britt-Lee Jonasson and Brendan Jonasson and Ryley McCarroll, their hearts will be forever changed by this sudden loss. Cheryl will be truly missed by her brothers and sister, Brian Steven (Lois), Kerry Steven (Rose) and Alana Webster, as well as, numerous nieces and nephews, including her beloved dog Maggie May. Cheryl was predeceased by her parents, John and Jean Steven; her daughter Amber Jonasson (nee Johnson); her brother John Steven; and her nephew Jason Steven. Cheryl was born in Winnipeg on November 15, 1946 to John and Jean Steven. She was the oldest of five siblings and they grew up in St.Vital and had many friends. Cheryl was a caring soul and loving soul who was always there to lend a helping hand. This was proven when her father passed, Cheryl left school early to help her mother in supporting her siblings. In 1964 Cheryl married Lawrence (Larry) Johnson, with whom she had two children, Shelley and Amber. Years later, Cheryl met and married Jim Tanner in 1994. Not only was Cheryl a devoted mother and wife, she was also a hard worker and she had a long standing career with CancerCare Manitoba. During her working career Cheryl became the President of the CUPE 1515 Union. As well she sat on the Board of Directors for CancerCare Manitoba. She was well respected and cared for by her many friends at CancerCare, she loved her job there and retired in 2016. Cheryl was a very kind and compassionate person. Her caring and support for others often went above and beyond, in both her personal and professional life. She was an intuitively good listener, very principled and she was a pillar for others. Cheryl had the biggest smile and was youthful with a fun spirit. Her great sense of humour was deep and this is what made Cheryl who she was, a beautiful soul. She loved her family and enjoyed spending her time with daughters and her grandchildren. Cheryl was adventurous and loved to travel. She travelled extensively taking many trips to places such as; Las Vegas, Grand Forks San Francisco, England, San Diego, Cuba, Hawaii and Florida. She loved to travel with her daughter Shelley and her husband Jim. Many hours were spent enjoying her garden oasis in her back yard with family and friends and her little dog Maggie. Cheryl's family gives special thanks to Mary Akisanya, Cheryl's good friend, for her support and strong friendship. They also thank the staff of Concordia Hospital and a special thanks to Drew. The family extends a special thank you to Ursula, Karen and Tracy for all your kindness and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Luther Village, or the Winnipeg Humane Society. A gathering in honour of Cheryl will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Highway.
