KALLA DAIEN It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our dear mother and grandmother, Kalla Daien, on December 10, 2018 at the age of 87. She passed peacefully, with family members at her side, at the St. Boniface Hospital. Kalla will be forever loved and remembered by her son and daughter-in-law Alan and Wendy, grandchildren, Laurie and Jillian, and by son Bryan and family. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Anne Gardner and Esther Gardner, brother-in-law Arnold Packer, and numerous nieces and nephews. Kalla was predeceased by her parents, Aaron and Mariam Gardner, her loving husband Larry, sisters, Ida, Esther and Maimie, brothers, Al, Jack and Hy, and by sisters-in-law, Shirley Packer and Faye Gardner. Kalla was born in Hoffer, Saskatchewan and moved to Winnipeg in her late teens. She met our father while working at Gensers Furniture. They married in 1954 and began their life together in North Winnipeg. Kalla was totally devoted to her immediate and extended family. She was everybody's Auntie Kalla. She enjoyed close relationships with her sisters-in-law, and always enjoyed her frequent dinners out with sister-in-law Shirley. Kalla took special pride in her grandchildren, Laurie and Jillian, and her grand-dog Oreo. The family wish to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Ward 7A West, and ICU E2 at St. Boniface Hospital for their outstanding care of our mother during her stay in hospital. Service was held December 13 at Congregation Etz Chayim Synagogue officiated by Rabbi Kliel Rose, Cantor Tracy Kasner Greaves, and cousin Cantor Gerry Daien. Pallbearers were Laurie Daien, Martin Packer, Cheryl Waterman, Jodi Gilmore, Daryl Gardner and Harry Schwartz. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Jeff Reiss and Terry Parsonage. Donations may be made in Kalla's memory to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation and the Etz Chayim Synagogue, or a charity of your choice. Our mother was a special person whose memory will live on forever. We love you.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My deepest condolences to Alan, Wendy and family. I met Kalla many years ago at the Wellness Centre where she went in the winter months (thanks to Wendy), being way too "busy" to go in the summer months with her gardening and yard work. Behind her elegant quiet exterior was a wicked sense of humour, a warm personality and a love of talking. She would often tell me to "zip it" so she could continue her workout but then go on to tell me "one more thing". She insisted that she was very shy and didn't talk much but she couldn't convince me of that. Kalla often spoke of Laurie and Jillian (and Oreo) and was proud of their accomplishments. I will miss her dearly. Rest in peace, my friend. Keiko - Posted by: Keiko Burke (Friend) on: Jan 08, 2019
