OSKAR AGUST KJARTANSON
Date of Passing: Jan 02, 2019
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryOSKAR AGUST KJARTANSON Oskar Kjartanson passed away on January 2, 2019, with the love of his life, Sandra, by his side. Oskar was predeceased by his parents, Jon and Kristjana; his brothers, Joe, Raymond and Phillip; and sisters, Bennetta and Sylvia. He is survived by his brother Ben. Left to miss him are his wife of 55 years, Sandra; his children, Derrick (Lori), Todd (Laurie), Shawn (Allison) and Jason (Jennifer); and his grandchildren, Riley (Ashley), Kama, Dustin (Joanne), Meghan, Taylor, Brody, Kaden, Carter, Maiya and Courtney. Oskar was a proud Icelandic Canadian who was born and raised at Brekka on Hecla Island. He started working on the family fishing boat and mink farm when he was 14. He left the island at 20 to become an electrician and worked on various job sites across Canada until he and Sandra finally settled their family in Northern Manitoba. Oskar worked for Manitoba Hydro for 20 years; however, his retirement in 1999 lasted all of six months before the pair started working their way to the West Coast. They landed in British Columbia, where Oskar worked for SNC Lavalin in Castlegar and Campbell River as an electrical inspector. Oskar was a character. He flew planes, carved wooden chickens and was an avid curler. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, and canning the things he grew. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, and a good hockey game. Never one to sit around, Oskar was always looking for new projects to tackle. More than anything, he was proud of his boys and grandchildren. We will miss our Afi's strong presence at family gatherings; his patience during the annual rullupylsa- and vinarterta-making parties; and his excitement and enthusiasm during our hockey games. We are grateful that he shared with us his passion for fishing and the outdoors, his sense of adventure, and his pride in his Icelandic heritage. Sandra would like to thank our family and friends for their support during this difficult time. Thanks to the Southern Health Palliative and Home Care teams, CancerCare Manitoba, Riverview Health Centre and Brent Murphy of the Workers Compensation Board who kept Oskar comfortable. Please join us for a come-and-go-celebration of Oskar's life at Breezy Bend Country Club, 7620 Roblin Blvd., on January 19, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
