AREND (HARRY) BAKEMA It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and cousin on January 17, 2019. He will be missed by his loving wife Roseanna, of 38 years, his sisters, Cathy (Wayne) Finlay and family, Johanna (Charlie) Bynski and family. He will also be missed by his extended family, sister-in-law Gina (Renato) Calesso and family, and family in Holland. He was predeceased by his parents, Tryntje and Arend Bakema, his sister Hendrikje, and brother Albert. Harry was born in Groningen, Netherlands on June 15, 1952 and immigrated to Canada in October 1954. Harry proudly worked with Winnipeg Police Service for 32 years, starting July 12, 1971 until his retirement on March 22, 2003. Harry was an avid athlete. In high school at Transcona Collegiate he was a member of the successful track and field team and set many records at various distances. He later also coached a track team. In his adult years he skied and with the Police Department he played hockey and baseball, also managed and bowled with the Police and Pal bowling league. He ran in relay races with the Winnipeg Police Torch Run for Special Olympics. Harry loved to travel and made many trips to his favourite place Hawaii, also went on cruises and during his retirement he went to Netherlands, Greece, New York, Bahamas and Cape Cod. Harry had a green thumb and loved gardening. His yard was immaculate with a sea of flowers. During all of his life Harry was a people person - always honest, good, kind, caring and giving to others with a smile on his face, as with his family, as a track team member, as a coach, as a police officer and mentor, as a restaurant owner and as a good neighbour and friend. Harry lived life by his big heart. In memory of Harry's kind and giving nature do something kind and good for someone else. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel on 1442 Main Street. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)
I got to know Harry vicariously through his many friends, co-workers and associates. He was, indeed, one of the good ones and left a legacy of positive impacts upon those he encountered in life. The tragic event that he found himself in the middle of a few years ago affected him and his family profoundly and left its mark on more than one innocent family. Hopefully Harry's goodness will be the focus of memories others have of him... sincere condolences to his family... - Posted by: Bill Head (Friend of a friend) on: Jan 29, 2019
Always such a positive friendly personality. Harry had a great smile (which I was fortunate enough to see shortly before his passing). Roseanna you have been amazing for him and his spirit will forever be with you. We love you both. - Posted by: Aprille and Grant (Friends) on: Jan 28, 2019

I met Harry and Roseanna when I had a business relationship with them a number of years ago. As my client, I experienced & respected their integrity, decency, and supportive & amiable personalities. Harry & Roseanna were not only wonderful clients to work with, they became business friends and a pleasure to know. Roseanna, my heartfelt sympathy is extended to you. - Posted by: Irene (Business friend) on: Jan 28, 2019
The world is a lesser place now that we have lost Harry, a wonderful friend and neighbor. We are sad that tragedy, circumstance and a horrible disease robbed him of what could have been the best years of his life. Those who had the honour of knowing him understand what a kind, compassionate and gentle man he was, and those are the people that really matter. We will miss you in our neighbourhood Harry. You made our street a better place to live. We love you Roseanna and wish you peace and grace, knowing that you were Harry’s support and comfort right to the end. Love always, Liane, Greg, Court and Rowen - Posted by: Liane Knoll-Kowk (Neighbor) on: Jan 26, 2019
Roseanna: I was so sorry to hear of Harry's passing. I knew him from visiting in your area, as well as working on a project with him and he was exactly as you described. Honest, good, caring and a people person. He was real and that is so rare in this day and age. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
