DOUGLAS CHARLES SKERRITT 1921 - 2019 Peacefully, on February 6, Douglas passed away, at the Grace Hospital, at the age of 97. Left to cherish his memory are his son Don (Jo-Anne) and granddaughter Jennifer; daughter Bonny Hill (Bruce) and granddaughter Chelsea Michaels, great-grandson Cole Hunt and great-granddaughter Jayde Harkness. Doug was predeceased by his loving wife Kay, and brothers, Robert and Clarence. Doug was born in Winnipeg and lived there until 1935 when he moved to Camper, Manitoba. He farmed there until he joined the armed services in 1941. Doug served overseas in England, Holland, Belgium and Germany with the 3rd Canadian Division and the 4th Canadian Armour Division (1939 to 1945) campaign. Doug received the "Oakleaf Cluster" and was mentioned in dispatches for "Gallant and Distinguished Service". Doug married Kay in 1949. He was hired by Department of Transport Canada in 1956 at the Winnipeg International Airport and was an assistant air traffic controller (tower) until his retirement in 1976. Doug took up private flying lessons in 1966. His wife Kay was his first passenger. Flying was the love of his life and he spent many hours flying with Canadian Air Search and Rescue as a navigator and spotter. Since 1985 Doug volunteered at Western Canada Aviation Museum and Meals on Wheels. Doug loved the outdoors, especially biking and cross-country skiing with his wife Kay. The family would like to express special thanks to the staff and many friends at Sturgeon Creek Two, especially Pat for taking good care of Doug. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 1:00 p.m. at St. Andrews Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Ave. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Doug's memory to a charity of your choice.

  • Sorry to hear of Doug's passing. Our condolences Don, to you and your family. Ed Clayton & Angie Wood, Vernon, B.C. - Posted by: Ed Clayton (Friend) on: Feb 16, 2019

  • My condolences to the family, he was a wonderful uncle. Uncle Doug used to take me flying when I was a young teen and it was the thrill of a lifetime. He even let me take control of the plane as his co-pilot, now if that isn't trust and love I don't know what is. I will always cherish the time we spent together flying. Rest in peace my uncle, I know Aunt Kay will be waiting for you with open arms. - Posted by: Glen Gray & Kimberly Newell (nephew) on: Feb 16, 2019

  • He was a great guy and good, long time friends of my Dad & Mom (Syd & Mary Rushforth). He always had a smile for everyone & great sense of humour. Our condolences to all his family. He will be missed. - Posted by: Evelyn & Trevor Tilston-Jones (Friends) on: Feb 09, 2019
