JOAN ALEXA MACDONALD March 27, 1954 - February 11, 2019 After a lengthy illness, Joan passed away at the Victoria Hospital at the age of 64. Left to mourn her passing are her sisters, Maureen MacDonald of Winnipeg, MB and Barb Spisich of Mississauga, ON. She was predeceased by her mother Elna MacDonald (Johnson) and father John MacDonald. Joan was born in Winnipeg on March 27, 1954. She taught Home Economics for many years, most recently at Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg. Joan loved animals and had pets her whole life. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to CancerCare Manitoba. Maureen and Barb, I grieve with you over the loss of your sister. I share a longer history with Maureen (having met in River Heights Junior High) and that connection led me to Joan professionally. When I was a new home economics teacher and the only one in my entire school division, Joan provided me with ideas and support. In later years, Joan and I often spent time together as colleagues and as friends. When my little boy was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, Joan told him about and introduced him to her diabetic cat. David fondly remembers visiting the cat that was "just like" him! Ironically, we both also remember wonderful Christmas baking from the MacDonald household.
