DARLENE KATHERINE BILLINGHURST 1947 - 2019 After suffering complications related to chronic illness, Darlene passed away on February 16, 2019, at Health Sciences Centre, at the age of 71. Darlene was born in Winnipeg on August 1, 1947. She was predeceased by her daughter Whitney Ann, and her parents, Ann and Alex Kalian. She is survived by her husband Mervyn; son Brant; daughter Domanie; son-in-law Aaron, and grandchildren, Scarlett and Eli. On September 11, 1971 she married Mervyn and together they raised a family, made a home and shared 47 good years of marriage. Darlene was a kind and generous spirit, and despite many health problems over the years, she always put the care of others before herself until she was no longer able. Darlene was active in respite work through Kali Shiva and her church, establishing the Winnipeg Harvest Food Depot there. She loved to garden and entered many horticultural competitions, taking home many winning ribbons for her efforts. Summers were spent at the lake, enjoying boating, fishing and time with her family. Second only to her dedication to her family was Darlene's love of books. She dedicated much time to building an incredible collection of literature and rare books. Her philanthropic personality extended to her love of animals, supporting various charities over the years. During her last days, she had her family by her side at every moment until she made her way into the arms of her Saviour. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 22, 2019 at St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church, 881 Autumnwood Dr. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3 or to St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church.
