NICOLA (NICK) DI SANTO May 27, 1932 - January 31, 2019 At home, with his wife by his side, Nicola Di Santo, aged 86, passed in the early hours of January 31, 2019. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of almost 60 years, Clelia Di Santo, his children, Mariella Di Santo (Rick Mayhew), Manuela Di Santo (John Currie) and Marcello Di Santo, his grandchildren, Micaela Mayhew (Wesley Giesbrecht), Braidan Mayhew, Quentin Mayhew (Tao Mayhew), Dario Di Santo and Danica Di Santo (Mitchell Hansen), and his great-grandsons, Maddox and Hendrix Giesbrecht. Nicola is also survived by numerous extended families both in Canada and Italy. Nicola was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been predeceased by his parents, Giuseppe Di Santo and Maria Pomponio, and his six siblings, Valentino, Domenico, Teresa, Anna, Antonio and Michele. Born in Liscia, Chieti, Italy, Nicola left home, on his own, at a very young age in search of a better life. Boxer, motorcycle stuntman, tailor, the army, and the mines of Belgium were all part of his journey prior to finding his way to Canada in May of 1957. It was in Winnipeg that Nick met his wife to be, Clelia, and they started to build their life together, raising their three children, and making Winnipeg their home. Always a visionary, Nick went from tailor to hairdresser, to salon owner and ultimately to successful businessman, purchasing Frost Beauty Supply Co. and building a legacy for his family for years to come. He invested in real estate, built and designed buildings, and one has to marvel how the humble little boy from a small town in Italy came to own property and homes in Canada, the US, and his self-professed piece of paradise in the Turks and Caicos. Above all this however, the most important thing to Nick was his family. Everything he did, he did for his wife, his children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. Hardly a day went by that he didn't profess to one of his children "all this is for you". We will always remember you for that fierce love of family and this will guide us, give us strength and comfort us as we continue to journey without you. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive condolences Tuesday, February 26 at 10:00 a.m. and Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Parish, 510 River Ave. with Rev. Father Sam Argenziano presiding. Over the years Nick fought several health battles, overcoming each and every one of them, but it was his respiratory illnesses he found most trying. As such, the family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made in Nicola's memory to the Manitoba Lung Association.
