Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOREEN DOROTHY CARRUTHERS December 7, 1932 - February 10, 2019 Doreen passed peacefully in her sleep, at the age of 86, after several years of battling Alzheimers and Dementia. Her last years were spent at River Park Gardens Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. She now joins her husband James (Jim) Carruthers who predeceased her in 2001, as well as parents, George and Amelia, brothers, Dave, Theodore, Ronny, Art, Elmer and Bill, sisters-in-law, Elenor and Alvina, and son-in law Barry. She leaves to mourn, three sons, Robin (Karen), Rod (Jean) and Don (Michele); daughter Peggy; grandchildren, Dana (Stéphane), Reid (Jodi), Justin, Nicole, Clint (Jessica), Dale (Nayla), Neil (Laura), Grace, Paul, Ryan (Dione) and Leanne; great-grandchildren, Amélie, Evan, Tyson, Isabella, Munroe and Aubrie, and sisters-in-law, Ruth, Gail and Connie. Doreen was born in rural Saskatchewan near the hamlet of Runnymede. She grew up on a farm where she developed a strong work ethic and love of gardening and wildlife. She married Jim when she was 18 years old and they were happily married for over 50 years until his passing. Doreen and Jim lived in Runnymede, Saskatchewan and in Brandon, Neepawa and Waldersee in Manitoba, as well as in Atikokan, Ontario before settling down in Winnipeg. Doreen was most proud of obtaining her Grade 12 equivalency which led her to a 22 year teacher's aide career at Pinkham School in Winnipeg, which she absolutely loved and excelled at. Doreen and Jim loved family, friends, camping and fishing. Their pinnacle achievement, other than family, was the cottage which they built at Bird River in the tree tops overlooking a beautiful waterfall. Doreen took an active part in building the large family cottage on the steep banks of the river, where she welcomed family and friends with open arms. Doreen cherished her role of wife, mother and grandmother. She loved having family over for special events and was known for her great dinners and evenings quietly playing games. Doreen also loved sports and enjoyed cheering on her kids and grandkids in many activities including watersports, baseball, hockey and curling. During the last years of Jim's life, he struggled with diabetes and Doreen provided constant, exceptional care to him, refusing any type of home care. In 2007, Doreen moved to River Park Gardens where she experienced wonderful, compassionate care. The family will be forever grateful to them. To us, they are angels. The family invites you to come and say good-bye to Doreen at Faith Lutheran Church, 1311 Dakota Street in Winnipeg on May 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation has taken place care of Voyage Funeral Home and Crematorium. Doreen will be interred with Jim near Togo, Saskatchewan at a later date. Family will be advised. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, KidSport Manitoba, or to a charity of your choice.

One of the memories I have of Aunt Doreen is sitting at my parents' kitchen table cleaning wild blueberries back in Atikokan about 50 years ago. Another memory is from nearly 39 years ago when she came to Victoria to see my mom before my mom passed away. Can’t remember the details, but she had my mom laughing which was a very heartfelt moment for all of us. Aunt Doreen was a beautiful person, inside and out. She is now in the arms of Jesus. I pray for peace and comfort and many great memories for all her family. Love Judy. - Posted by: Judy & Dave Kosolofski (Neice) on: Mar 02, 2019
