Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVERA LUCILLE HOGG April 18, 1922 - March 17, 2019 Peacefully, surrounded by children and grandchildren, Mom passed away March 17 at the age of 96. She was predeceased by her beloved husband John in 1999, and is survived by son Gary (Isabel), son John, daughter Janice (Doug, deceased 2018), and grandchildren, Johnny and Annie. Mom was born in Starbuck, MB, one of seven siblings with only her brother Don surviving her. The family moved from the farm to the West End of Winnipeg, where Mom grew up. She worked in the Grill Room at Eatons, where she met her future husband. Married during the war, Mom lived in Vancouver to be close to Dad who was assigned to R.C.A.F. Patricia Bay on Vancouver Island. Mom and Dad spoke fondly of their time there, where they spent time in a cabin on Long Beach while he was stationed at the radar base in Tofino. They returned to Winnipeg to raise their family in Silver Heights, where Mom lived for over 60 years. Mom was an enthusiastic volunteer, president of the Silver Heights Community Club and spent over 35 years volunteering at the Grace Hospital Gift Shop. She enjoyed her years with the local bridge club and curling with Dad and their friends from the CBC. Mom was always full of spunk and at the age of 45 took it upon herself to get her drivers license, learning on the Pinto wagon. The center of her life was always her family. She was never happier than when hosting wonderful family gatherings at Harmon Avenue and Grand Beach. A fabulous cook, we all have so many fond memories of happy times she put together. Her grandchildren were a source of great joy and she remained actively involved in all their doings. Mom saw the good in people and treated everyone with kindness. She was always there with words of encouragement and support and we all left feeling better after a visit with her. She remained keenly interested in life right to the end, making new friends during over 10 years at Sturgeon Creek II Retirement Residence, and with the staff at West Park Manor who were so kind to her. She had an amazing memory for the details of everyone's lives. Her husband John said "Vera is a comfort to all who know her", and that remained true throughout her life. Mom suffered a debilitating stroke in 2017. After a lengthy stay in hospital she moved to West Park Manor where she worked so hard to get better, and never gave up on life, as she needed more time with her family, wanted to walk again, and regain her independence. Many thanks to all the staff who helped her through this difficult year. In the spring, on her wedding anniversary, Mom will be laid to rest next to John at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It’s always difficult to lose a Mom. We lived down the street at #51 but as kids we all interacted. - Posted by: Carolyn McFerran (Former Neighbour on Harmon) on: Mar 23, 2019
