DENE MICHAEL LATIMER
1957 - 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Dene in Winnipeg, MB on March 20, 2019 at the age of 61 years.
Dene was born in Lynn Lake, MB on May 21, 1957, the first child of Helen Rosie (Procyshyn) and Lawrence Gerald (Gerry) Latimer. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerry (1978) and Helen (2018), his grandparents, as well as many beloved aunts and uncles.
Dene left the north as a youngster to attend Notre Dame, where he played hockey and completed his high school education. Since the NHL was not calling, he decided to go to Assiniboine Community College in Brandon, MB to start his lifelong career as an Electrician. He returned to his Northern roots, working for Sherritt Gordon Mines in Leaf Rapids, MB, before moving to Marathon, ON. This was where he and his wife Debbie raised their family and made their most significant memories. Small town life was made for Dene. He loved that he knew everyone and, believe me, they sure knew him!
Dene moved to Winnipeg in 2013 and made it home for the past six years. He was always travelling back and forth to contract jobs at various mine sites. With his extended family in the city, it was an excellent place for him to "hang his hat" and refresh before getting back on the road to the next adventure. He had many exceptional experiences in his travels and he made friends easily and for life.
Dene's life was filled with many friends and family, but his proudest role was being a Grandpa to three exceptional grandchildren. Dene raved about them every chance that he could. He was so proud of his two sons, Michael and Jeffrey, and all of their life accomplishments. He would burst with pride, and get a little teary eyed, when telling others about them.
Dene will be remembered by his peers as a funny, wise-cracking guy and one who had a heart of gold. He was always there for anyone who needed him. His love for the sport of curling was infinite and he would schedule all of his activities around the major televised bonspiels. His brother fondly recalls that at every game he played with the Arts and Letters league, his teammates would hear him roar, "You don't throw guards when you have the hammer!" But, of course, his brother always ignored him!
Left to wonder why he was taken from us so soon are his sons, Michael (Krystal), and Jeffrey (Natalie); his grandchildren, Hudson, Landon and his princess Charlee; his brother Devin (Keri) and sisters, Desiree (Carlos), Deri (Randy); his nieces and nephews, Mercege (Ryan), Jagger, Ali, Max, Hazel and Oscar; his aunt June Ranson and numerous extended family and friends.
We are very grateful to have had Dene in our life and he will be greatly missed by all of us.
Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held before taking Dene back to his northern roots in Lynn Lake for the last time.

We love you Faja!!

  • We were so shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of our friend, Dene. He will always be remembered as we reminisce about the wonderful times we had with the Latimer family in Marathon. For many years we celebrated all of the important holidays around the dining room table - ‘just the 8 of us’ as Jeffrey called us. Dene always entertained us with his sense of humour and, as long as Dene was around, laughter abounded. He will always bring a smile to our faces whenever we think about those times we spent together. Our condolences to the entire family. - Posted by: Lynne, Doug, Teri Lynne and Craig Whitmore (family friends) on: Apr 11, 2019

  • Sincere condolences to the Latimer and extended families. We were very fortunate to make the acquaintance of the Latimer family in Marathon and as with us, originally from Manitoba. We were also lucky to have Dene visit us at our farm after we too moved back "home". He will be missed. - Posted by: Van and Deb Moffatt (Family Friends) on: Apr 09, 2019

  • My thoughts and prayers go out to Dene's family and friends. I couldn't agree any more of the well written obituary of Dene! I was a friend of Dene through work but most important through curling. We either competed against each other or curled together in several bonspiels. I remember one bonspiel we curled together in Beardmore where Dene gave me major heck for calling a wrong shot. It was so funny as everyone had left the ice surface but Dene and myself. As Dene was reprimanding me for the wrong shot, the teams for the next game were ready to take our ice. One guy spoke up and said "hey you won the game get over it". My reply was "imagine if we hadn't" lol!! Whatever Dene did in life, he did it full of passion. Rest in peace Dene. Ken Stewart - Posted by: Ken Stewart (Friend) on: Apr 07, 2019

  • This is such sad news and my heart goes out to the Latimer family during this time. This was a few years ago now, but I remember meeting up with Dene and my folks at Tims one day. It was interesting to hear about where work had taken him and he spoke very fondly of his family. He had a smile on his face throughout the visit; it was great to see him. - Posted by: Kathleen Muithead (Family friend) on: Apr 06, 2019
