DOUGLAS (DOUG) JAMES HUTCHINGS
Born: November 1, 1927
Date of Passing: April 3, 2019

Dad passed away peacefully on April 3, 2019 at the age of 91.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, he leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Lorna, daughter Leslie Kirby, (Jim - Daniel and Cameron), son James (Liz - Stephen and Brandon), and daughter Marion Hutchings Reimer (Terry - Alex and Yana), all of Winnipeg.
Dad was born in Calgary, Alberta, the only child of Bessie and Doug (Sr.) Hutchings. The family moved to Winnipeg when he was two years old. He attended Grosvenor and R.H. Smith schools. He attended high school at Trinity College (Toronto). Dad attended both the University of Toronto (Victoria College) and the University of Manitoba, where he graduated with a degree in Social Work. He married Mom in 1955 and moved to Dauphin where he worked for the Provincial Welfare Department. They returned to Winnipeg and he began his lifelong career in sales. He worked for General Foods for eight years, and then moved into the Life Insurance business with Monarch Life. This enabled him to do what he truly loved, which was to meet people and assist them with their finances. Dad had a large client base, both in the city and also in the Interlake.
The family was raised on Farwell Bay in Fort Garry, surrounded by many good friends and neighbours. Dad was always active in the community, serving as a proud member and President of the Fort Garry Rotary Club. As a member of the Fort Garry Historical Society he took pride in being responsible for the 'Welcome to Fort Garry' sign on Pembina Highway. Dad was an adventurer and took his family on camping trips from Montreal to Flin Flon to Victoria. He was always one to take the road less travelled. However, his favourite place was the family cottage at West Hawk Lake, where he loved to putter around the cottage and then let out a loud WOOHOO after taking a plunge into the chilly West Hawk water.
One of his passions was politics. He served as school trustee for the Fort Garry School Division in the 1970s. He served as campaign manager for Philip Lee in the 1977 Manitoba General election, and campaigned on behalf of countless individuals, in all three levels of government. Dad was very involved in the United Church throughout his life, teaching the youth, and recently took part in Circles of Reconciliation, an initiative to help strengthen ties with the indigenous community. He will be missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the CNIB Foundation or Trinity United Church.
A service to celebrate Doug's life will be held at Trinity United Church, 933 Summerside Avenue on Tuesday, April 9 at 2:00 p.m.

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • I was Doug's neighbor for years while I was a teenager. He was always friendly and didn't get mad at me too much even though I probably deserved it. He'd always be weeding his garden and would pull me over and try and advise me on my finances. He was always pretty nice to me. In a weird turn of events me and my brother currently live in the Hutchings former house in Ft.garry. I've been Hoping see Doug's ghost floating around here but haven't yet. I'll let you guys know if I see anything. Anyways I've probably gone on long enough so I'll sign off by saying Doug was a good guy and my neighbor for years. - Posted by: Matthew Russell (Friend and neighbor) on: Apr 13, 2022
