GIOVANNI SARDO
February 4, 1934 - April 21, 2019
He was born February 4, 1934 in Racalmuto, Sicily. He started work at a young age, and by 19 was selected to work in Paris as a bricklayer. He worked there for over a decade. He married his forever girlfriend Nicoletta in 1964. In 1966, they immigrated to Canada and eventually settled in Winnipeg to build their family. Giovanni worked over 40 years as a foreman bricklayer with Kornoski and Keller, Ernie Keller Contractors. Before his stroke in 2004, he would often be found tinkering in the garage with his music on blast, making homemade wine, watching soccer, painting the artwork that fills the family home, and trying his luck with Lotto 6/49. His ultimate joy was being able to see all four of his grandchildren born. The memories made during their weekly visits will forever be treasured.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 54 years, Nicoletta, children, Linda Sardo (Matt Rendulic), Antonietta Buscemi (Antonio) and Filomena Murray (Michael); grandchildren, Isabella, Matteo, Sienna and Ellie; sister Nicolina Rizzo, and sister-in-law Francesca Alaimo (Calogero) of Winnipeg; brothers-in-law, Eduardo Rizzo (Enza) and Salvatore Rizzo (Pilar), as well as sisters-in-law, Onofria Rizzo and Rosa Salviroli (all of Europe); along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends in Winnipeg and in Europe.
He was predeceased by his parents, Giuseppe and Alfonsina Sardo; parents-in-law, Angelo and Filomena Rizzo, brothers-in-law, Giuseppe and Ignazio Rizzo (Europe), as well as Giuseppe Rizzo (Winnipeg); along with nieces, Angela Brancato and Giulia Rizzo, who passed away just two days before her Zio on Good Friday.
The family would like to thank Dr. Robyn Sen, Home Care Services, and the amazing staff at Seven Oaks Hospital for their excellent care and support. Thanks also to friends and family for their love and kindness.
Condolences will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave., Winnipeg, MB. Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Monsignor Maurice Comeault presiding.
Entombment will follow at Holy Angel Mausoleum - Green Acres Memorial Gardens, #1 Hwy. E, at Navin Road, R.M. of Springfield, MB.
Pallbearers: Antonio Buscemi, Matt Rendulic, Michael Murray, Angelo Alaimo (nephew), Roberto Tuzzolino (godson), and Pietro Buscemi.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or CancerCare Manitoba.

So very sorry to hear of your father's passing. He was a nice man- I remember him from the Sicilian Club days. He never said a whole lot, but you could often tell exactly what he was thinking (like how crazy we were lol). Thinking of you all during this difficult time. - Posted by: Novella Troia (Family Friend) on: Apr 24, 2019

He was a kind and giving man who always treated me like a son. He loved working with his hands doing stucco work and then even painting. Just last January I went there to introduce him to our new adoptive children Giovanni had a big huge smile on his face that I'll never forget. Even though he couldn't speak you can tell by his eyes and smile that he was proud of to see all of us. We love you padrino and we know that you are watching over all of us now. - Posted by: Franco Roberto Tuzzolino (Godson) on: Apr 23, 2019
