CAROLINE ANN CHURKO

On April 19, 2019 with heavy hearts we said goodbye to our mom, sister and dear friend Carol.
She is forever remembered by her family - sons, Colin (Heather) and Adam, brothers, Cas (Penni) and Mike (Madelene), sister Pat (Al) and grandchildren, Nicholas, Lachlan, Savanna and Gus.
Born October 8, 1947 in Barrie, Ontario, Carol was the eldest child of Casimer and Nell Churko. She travelled across the country, a self-proclaimed Air Force Brat, graduating high school while the family was stationed in Calgary.
Carol graduated with the Class of '67 from St. Boniface General Hospital School as a Registered Nurse. She spent nearly her entire 40-year professional career at St. Boniface where she held several leadership roles including Head Nurse (MICU AND ICS), Instructor and Clinical Resource Nurse. Carol was widely liked and respected by those she worked with and touched many lives.
Carol retired in 2006 to fulfill her dreams of travelling visiting PEI and Nova Scotia, BC, to Cozumel, Italy and to her beloved Provence, France. Family came first and she was over the moon with the birth of her grandchildren. She enjoyed Friday "Board Meetings", attending MTC and volunteering.
Although retirement plans were temporarily sidetracked by a Lewy Body Dementia diagnosis, Carol's brilliant mind and fierce stubborn streak earned hard won independence for most of the six-year journey. She fought tooth and nail for each day spent loving her grandkids. She loved lunch dates with friends and Art to Inspire at the WAG. She kept up regular chats with her boys and adored reading to her grandkids. More than that, she loved life and was an inspiration to us all.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Irene Baron Eden Centre for making it feel like home. Heartfelt thanks to the health care staff, especially the wonderful nurses, who cared for Mom at Concordia General Hospital.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Niakwa Country Club on Sunday, April 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

  • I'm so sorry to have missed the Celebration of Life yesterday. I just learned of Carol's loss this morning. Carol was in the class ahead of me. We worked together in ICU and had our first sons within a few weeks of each other. Both were named Colin. Carol was such a bright woman and compassionate nurse. It was an honour to know and work with her. My sympathy goes out to her family. May you always remember the happy times and the warmth of her love. - Posted by: Beverly Stephen (MacRae) (Friend, workmate, Students together at SBGH) on: Apr 29, 2019

  • Carol will be remembered fondly for her good sense of humour, fairness and mentor in her role as CRN on CVT and even more importantly for the caring compassionate person she was. My sincere condolences to Carol’s family and friends. May her star shine brightly in the night sky.🦋 “Perhaps they are not stars in the sky but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy.” - Posted by: Janice Tokle (Colleague in Nursing) on: Apr 25, 2019

  • Sending all of my thoughts and love to you and your family. She was a lovely lady, with a genuine smile on her face every time I saw her. :) - Posted by: Kim Martens (Friend) on: Apr 24, 2019

  • Carol and I were best friends in training and she was my bridesmaid. I moved away so we didn’t see each other very much in later years. I visited her in May of 2017 and we had a wonderful visit. It was clear that she loved her children and their spouses and children very much. She also felt loved and cared for. I am not able to get to the ceremony but Carol and her family will be in my prayers. - Posted by: Joy Warkentin (Friend and classmate) on: Apr 24, 2019

  • Carol and I travelled together for work when we were head nurses. Carol was fun, accommodating, and was a wonderful teacher. She had a way about her that made learning fun. Nobody could teach 12 lead EKGs like she could. She was well respected by all health care members. RIP my friend Carol - Posted by: Joyce Thomas (Friend and colleague ) on: Apr 24, 2019
