PAUL BURDZ
November 11, 1931 - April 27, 2019
Paul will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Irene, and son Michael (Bonnie). He will also be missed by his brother Peter (Diane), his large extended family, and his friends. Paul was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Alexandra Burdz, and his brothers, John, Victor, Walter and Boris.
Paul was born in Bula, Belarus. During the Second World War, his family was forced to relocate to Germany, where he spent his teenage years. His family immigrated to Manitoba in 1950, where Paul and his family members worked at a sugar beet farm near Portage la Prairie. His family then relocated to Winnipeg.
In 1958, Paul and Irene were married, and lived in St. Vital for over 45 years. Paul worked at Swift Meats as a butcher for approximately 25 years, until the company left Winnipeg. He then worked at Buhler Versatile on the assembly line for approximately 20 years, until his retirement at age 65. In retirement, Paul and Irene travelled extensively, including a return visit to Belarus, as Paul was extremely proud of his Belarussian heritage.
Paul was an avid sports fan throughout his life. As a young man he played competitive soccer. As an adult he competed in table tennis and won many tournaments in different age categories. He was a fan of the Jets and Blue Bombers. He was also a stamp and coin collector.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at St. Boniface Hospital for the care, compassion, and kindness they showed Paul and his family during his hospitalization.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 4 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Mary The Protectress on 820 Burrows Avenue in Winnipeg. Interment will take place at Brookside Cemetery.
