MARGARET IRENE FERGUSON

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Margaret Irene Ferguson (nee Warren) on April 27, 2019. Margaret passed away peacefully, at her home in West Park Manor, in her 97th year. Margaret was predeceased by her husband Robert (Bob) Ferguson in January 2015.
Margaret will be sadly missed, but always remembered, by her sister Mary Campbell, her three children, Lyn Ferguson (Nick Martin), Robert W. Ferguson and Marnie Ferguson (Dave Skidmore). A loving grandmother, great-grandmother and mentor, "Muzz" will be missed by her grandchildren, Graeme Schwindt (Donaya), Christopher Ferguson-Martin (Karen Orr), Gillian Ferguson-Martin (Brad Keizerwaard) and Madeleine Skidmore, and great-grand-children, Ian, Clare, Ava and Norah Schwindt. Also mourning her passing are many relations across Canada and a wide circle of cherished friends.
Margaret grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Home Economics and moved to Winnipeg where she earned her Master's degree in Home Economics - specializing in Foods and Nutrition at the University of Manitoba. There she met her dear husband Bob, a Professor of Geology, and they were married on December 29, 1948 in Edmonton. They made their home in Wildwood Park in Winnipeg where they lived very happily for 62 years. Bob took three research leaves and Margaret made the most of these opportunities to pursue her own interests and make a wide network of lasting friendships while living in Cambridge, England (1949 to 1950), Oxford, England (1972 to 1973) and Adelaide, Australia (1979 to 1980). Margaret and Bob's love of travel took them to many parts of the world and often to visit family and friends across Canada.
Margaret had a rich and fulfilling life. Her career began with a teaching position at the University of Manitoba in the Department of Home Economics in the 1960s. She left professional life to pursue her love of crafts: spinning, weaving, and nature-dying. Her work adorned their home and the cottage and is fondly remembered by her friends and family. Margaret was a highly esteemed and longtime member and later president of the Crafts Guild of Manitoba. She had a deep love for nature and the natural world. She cherished her time at the cottage she and Bob built in 1968 on Big Duck Island in Lake of the Woods. Margaret would warmly welcome visiting family and friends when she was not bird-watching or enjoying the sunset from the "point" with Bob.
Margaret had a very close relationship to her church community, the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg. She and Bob were regular attendees and participants in church life for many years. Margaret forged deep and lasting friendships with many people there and she and Bob hosted several "Unitarian weekends" at the cottage.
Margaret had a deep love for the arts, especially music. She and Bob were keen and devoted attendees and supporters of the arts in Winnipeg: the Manitoba Opera Company, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and the Manitoba Theatre Centre. They were frequent visitors to the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Margaret took great pride in being a "Winnipegger" and was proud of her Western roots.
A memorial service will be held July 8, 2019 at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg. Time of service forthcoming first week of July.
We would like to thank all the staff at West Park Manor, especially those who loved and cared for 'Muzz' for the last three and one half years in 2South, a special community for those with dementia. The nurses, health care aides, and recreation specialists are devoted in their care and support of their residents and families. We would also like to thank staff at The Portsmouth, Rosewood, Victoria General Hospital and Tuxedo Villa who looked after Margaret at different stops on her 16 year journey with dementia. The family also appreciated the thoughtful and compassionate medical care provided by doctors, Karen Boyd and Corne Van Rensburg.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation to an organization of their choice.
