CALVIN CHAN
Left to mourn Calvin, is best friend and longtime companion Ai-Ing; daughter Trinidee (grandson Londyn); sister Lily (Ken), their sons, Brendan (Breanne), Bradley (Alanna), Bryan (Salem), and sister Jean (Doug). Calvin was predeceased by his father James and mother Betty.
Throughout his life, Calvin loved all things outdoors. He was a talented carpenter as witnessed by the impressive landscaping job in his backyard. Fishing and camping were his idea of sport. To this end, he recently realized his lifelong dream of owning a fishing boat. He could be heard proudly and loudly inviting anyone who was listening that he would love to take them fishing this summer. Sadly, this was not to be.
The family would like to thank the members of the Winnipeg Police Service for their compassion and helpfulness. We would also like to thank the doctors and staff of the Health Sciences Centre emergency and ICU units, who ensured that Calvin was receiving the best care, as well as taking care of us, his family. Your caring support was so much appreciated. Thanks as well to Mike for being such a good friend...and a final hug to Panda, his loyal canine companion.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to Diabetes Canada.
Please join the family for a celebration of Calvin's life on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 2:00 p.m., at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.

My Dad & all his siblings grew up across the street from the Chan family. They were all such great friends that I grew up knowing Calvin as, "Uncle Calvin". I can look back throughout my childhood and recall Uncle Calvin always being a part of it - just like a "real" Uncle. Visits to G'ma & G'pa on Valour Rd, summers at West Hawk and visiting him and Ai-Ing on Borrows where he would let me try out the latest and greatest Atari games! That's a long time ago. I hadn't seen Uncle Calvin in a very long time (maybe 20 years) but bumped into him not that long ago. Once he realized who I was, we chatted and caught up like no time had passed. I am so thankful that I made the point of re-introducing myself. Our visit was a great last encounter to remember. Rest in Peace Uncle Calvin - Posted by: Khristin (Henley) Lawrence (Family / Friend) on: May 23, 2019

So sorry for the loss suffered by Ai-ing and the rest of Calvin's family. Walking my dogs will not be the same without stopping to visit with Calvin along the way. Many times I stopped and took refuge from the rain in the garage with Calvin on my way back home with my dogs. He was a fun guy to just hang out and talk too. He was looking so forward to this summer. Now he is at the big boat launch in the sky. RIP - Posted by: Karen Jope (Neighbour) on: May 23, 2019

My sincere condolences to Ai-Ing Lily, Jean and family. I grew up with Calvin in the West End, and many parties and happy memories were shared by a large group of us. Throughout the years, I've met up with Calvin on a few occasions and always had hours long chats about the good ol' days! - Posted by: Pat (Kendrick) Bednarski (Childhood friend) on: May 21, 2019

So sorry to hear of Calvin's passing. We were friends back in school and shared the same Street, Valour Road. My Parents were friends of Calvin's dad as they went to the Moon Room often. Calvin was a steadfast friend during our school years and after that we met up quite often, not as much as each other would have like, but life does sometimes get in the way. What Was amazing about Calvin was no matter how long we had not seen each other he picked up on all the news and shared our life stories. Always friendly, happy and a great smile. He will be missed! - Posted by: Larry Bellefeuille (Old friend) on: May 19, 2019

Calvin was my age. We grew up on Valour Road. He was a proud member of my gang based on the comic book hero Blackhawk. Being Chinese, he was Chop Chop. Now I suppose that this would be looked down upon now but we did have a good time playing out our childhood fantasies. His dad ran Chan's Moon Room on Main Street. I remember having a great meal there around 1976. I saw Calvin a few years ago when he was visiting Bob Henley, one of the last surviving Valour Road original families. We had a great chat about our childhood, the neighbourhood and each others siblings. I will miss him. - Posted by: Grant Wichenko (Childhood Friend) on: May 18, 2019

Condolences from all the Phillips family. It’s been over 50 years and every time I met up with Calvin he had a new project plan or job on the go and of course Calvin would be the boss nothing less, the only way to think. It’s too bad about fishing. I am sure he would have been a master angler. Jeff Phillips - Posted by: Jeff phillips (Friend) on: May 18, 2019

So sad to hear of Calvin's passing. Calvin and I shared many wonderful times together swapping stories, drinking coffee and sharing a cigarette. Humorous, thoughtful and brimming with great stories, Calvin had great insight to share and his enthusiasm and support for others was a gift. Will miss his big smile and infectious laughter terribly. RIP my friend. - Posted by: Len (Friend) on: May 18, 2019
