IRVINE DONALD HENDIN

Irvine Donald Hendin died Friday, May 31, 2019 in Vancouver, BC at 92 years old, after years of Dementia.
Dony grew up in Winnipeg's North End, the middle of three sons, to Louis and Ruth (Marcus). The poor but nurturing environment shaped his life. He enjoyed sports with "The Canucks" where lifelong bonds were formed. He excelled at football at St. John's Tech High School. He graduated Medicine at University of Manitoba, and enjoyed a long and rewarding career as a radiologist at the University of Alberta and in private practice in Edmonton. Married to Gloria (Atnikov) for 66 years, they raised three sons in Edmonton, where the large extended families of Winnipeg were replaced by a family of friends. In 1981 Gloria and Dony moved to Vancouver and enjoyed another 38 years, as they transitioned to retirement, travel and enjoying their grandchildren.
He was a kind, honest, thoughtful person, and a consummate physician. In retirement, his keen eye and able hands allowed him to enjoy gardening, pottery, sculpture and photography. And a good long nap.
He'll be missed by his six grandchildren, for whom he transformed himself into "The Great Hendini", performing his cheesy but adorable magic act.
Don was the last sibling of Syd, Dave and infant sister Rita. He is survived by sisters-in-law, Shirley and Bernice.
Burial was at Temple Sholom Cemetery, Vancouver, BC, June 3, 2019.
Donations can be made in Don's memory to Temple Sholom Refugee Resettlement Fund (Vancouver, BC) or Louis Brier Jewish Home for the Aged, Music and Entertainment Fund.
Love, Gloria, Michael, Stephanie, Ariel, Loren, Perry, Merrill, Lavi, Yonah, Maya, Howard and Sophie.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My deepest condolences on the passing of "Uncle Donny". I always remember how growing up we (mom/dad/ and siblings) would all get together for the high holidays, bar mitzvas etc.. They were great times. I remember going to visit when Uncle Donny and Aunt Gloria lived in Edmonton. A lot of fond memories. - Posted by: shari fraser (hendin) (neice) on: Jun 08, 2019
