ELDEEN MARY HENDERSON
(nee CUMMINGS)
1920 - 2019
She is survived by her two children, Craig and Laurie (Hans).
As a young woman, Eldeen was an accomplished musician and had the privilege of playing for George VI. She graduated from Normal School and was an outstanding and highly valued teacher in the St. Vital School Division for over 30 years. She was revered by students and colleagues alike throughout her career. She sought humour and stimulating conversation. She stood up to injustice and never hesitated to speak out for the less fortunate. Upon retiring, she volunteered with Habitat for Humanity on jobs sites and in an administrative role. She travelled extensively and wintered in Spain up until the age of 90 where she amassed close friendships, fed countless stray cats and rescued abandoned dogs. She will be sorely missed.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held at the Assiniboine Park Conservancy July 15 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

I must apologize for not attending Eldeen's Celebration of Life. I was not aware she had passed and sincerely regret not attending. I first knew Eldeen over 45 years ago when we were colleagues at Norberry School. Her sense of humour, her directness, compassion and empathy endeared her to staff, students and parents. We were reunited as colleagues at Darwin School where Eldeen continued her "magic". She was an outstanding teacher, colleague and a special person. She will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Ron Guarino (Friend) on: Jul 17, 2019

I had the privilege of knowing Eldeen in her later years, but learned of her many gifts and attributes through collegial friends. Hers was the epitome of a life well-lived, and I offer my profound sympathy to family and close friends who surrounded her with love. - Posted by: Linda Chernenkoff (Friend) on: Jul 07, 2019

I was a pupil of hers in Stonewall Grade 2. I looked up to all teachers in those days. In remembrance to her. Ron Good - Posted by: Ron Good (Pupil) on: Jul 07, 2019

When my children were young students at Darwin School I did substantial volunteering, mostly in the library. Eldeen approached me one day and asked if I would consider going with her to various schools in the division to test hearing and eyesight for the little kinders. One of my best experiences EVER - her manner with her little charges was heartwarming, no nonsense coupled with a lot of genuine caring. Her humour kept me smiling for days. YEARS later I was at a senior's residence in St. Vital helping our MLA host a Christmas concert and tea for the residents, when who should come along but Eldeen. I went over to introduce myself, but she beat me to the punch, Nancy Perris, says she, it's been a while! I was astounded. We have lost a wonderful woman, a master at her craft, and a true friend to many. I am so fortunate to have worked with her.
