MARY ELLEN PENNELL
June 22, 1939 - June 28, 2019
Mary was predeceased by her husband Harold, her sisters, Pat and Shirley and brother Tom.
She will be sadly missed by her children, Bill (Diana), Don (Lynne), Patrick (Diana) and Mary Jane (Chris) Johnson; grandchildren, Meghan (Kyle), Krista (Patrick), Nichol, Jason (Juliette) and Andrew. She also leaves to mourn her sister-in-law Barb and brother-in-law Les, and many other family members and friends.
Mary was born and lived in Winnipeg all her life. She married Harold in October, 1957 and together they raised their family on Chevrier Boulevard in Fort Garry. They formed longlasting bonds with the community members that to this day still exist. Mary worked at the Golden Door Nursing Home, first as a care aide and then as the centre's activity director until her retirement in 2004.
She loved spending time with family and friends. She loved gardening and crafting and she would hold craft parties showing family and friends how to create wreathes and Christmas ornaments in the basement of her home on Hudson Street.
Mary moved to Delta Manor Apartments (55+) where she became a part of the building's activity planning. She enjoyed many hours helping to plan or just take part in luncheons, dinners, movie nights, bingo, shuffleboard, choir and the annual Christmas Craft Sale. Mary had a very strong group of friends at Delta who supported and helped each other on a daily basis.
Most recently, family and friends celebrated Mary's 80th birthday with a party in her honour. Mary enjoyed herself immensely, seeing old friends from the neighbourhood and her new friends from the apartment building.
A private family interment has taken place. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Mary's life on Tuesday, July 9 at 1:30 p.m. at Delta Manor, 100 Adamar Road.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary's honour to CancerCare Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)
Thoughts and prayers to all the family. With many happy memories of Auntie Marilyn - Posted by: Bonnie & Ken Pennell (Aunt to Ken) on: Jul 10, 2019
I spoke to Marylen the Wednesday after her 80th birthday and she told me how much fun she had at the party seeing friends and relatives that she hadn't seen for a while. She spoke SO highly of her kids and grandkids when I visited her. We met by chance in 2013 and became friends soon after. She reminded me of my aunt Denise who passed in 2015, so I adopted her as my new aunt. I wish we had more years together but God wanted her back. I have no doubt that she has already lit a candle or 2 in Heaven and is having the time of her life up there. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal. Hold on to your memories of Marylen and she will live on forever. My deepest sympathies to her family. - Posted by: Denise Williams (AVON lady by chance; friend by choice) on: Jul 10, 2019
From the visits on Chevrier as a youngun to the "Stukes" days of our teens, all the way up to today, this lady was always thought of with fondness, and, to be honest, a little fear. She has touched and been a part of so many lives that she will always live on in our hearts and memories! My most sincere condolences to all of her family, and those that were made to feel as if they were, family! - Posted by: Raymond Nowicki (family) on: Jul 09, 2019
I am so sorry for your loss. Marilyn was a steady good influence in all the lives she touched and will be sadly missed by Ray Nowicki, Earl Nowicki, Bonnie Doerksen, and Toni Hays. A part of our family history is now gone and will be forever missed. - Posted by: Toni Hays (nee Nowicki) (Cousin) on: Jul 09, 2019
Our deepest sympathy to the family. Be positive in knowing she was met with the loving arms of her sisters & brother. She was a very special lady, my mom's buddy. Love to you all. Greg & Karen Blanco - Posted by: Greg Blanco (Family ) on: Jul 08, 2019
My condolences to Billy, Donny, Patrick and Mary Jane. I am so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. My mom will miss her dearly in the block. Her and Ollie (Harold) were like an Aunt and Uncle to me and quite often took care of me when my parents needed help. I will never forget how they gave me the opportunity to buy their 1966 Ford Mustang in 1988. I still own the car to this day and I had promised to take her for a ride recently, sorry that never happened. I will see you guys at the memorial. Hopefully her and Ollie are up there having a good time with my Dad. God speed. - Posted by: Kevin Smith (Adopted nephew) on: Jul 06, 2019
Our condolences to the family. - Posted by: David Winter (Friend of sons) on: Jul 06, 2019
She was known to my family as Mrs P., she loved sitting outside her house and she would be reading her latest book, my kids would mind their ps & qs around her cause they would get a talking to, if they didn’t. We loved her and missed her and thought about her when she moved from Hudson. - Posted by: Ethel Straker (Friend/neighbour) on: Jul 06, 2019
