HELMUT (HAL) THIESSEN
1931 - 2019
Hal was born on February 17, 1931, to Henry and Olga Thiessen. Hal was the third of four sons. Hal met Marilyn, the love of his life, at the Grand Beach dance hall. Together, they raised three sons, Jim (Barb), Bob (Cathie) and Jeff (Anne-Marie).
Summers were enjoyed waterskiing and camping at Betula Lake. Later Hal and Marilyn spent a few years at Clearwater Bay before buying Marilyn's dream cottage at Albert Beach. Hal and Marilyn worked hard together in business and in raising their family. Family was a continuous theme in Hal's working career. In his early years he was very proud to work alongside of his father in the family trucking business. Later he worked closely with his brother John and he was proud of his role in the success of National Typewriter. He began a successful leasing business with Marilyn and, lastly, he worked with his grandson Brett into his eighties. Hal had a strong work ethic that he passed on to his family. He was forward thinking, positive and generous. Marilyn passed away suddenly in 1987. After Marilyn's passing Hal met and enjoyed the companionship of Coralie Bornais until his passing.
Hal is survived by his sons; their wives; and his eight grandchildren, Lauren, Brett, Bridget, Cooper, Jay, Shane, Dylan, and Kyra; as well as three great-grandchildren, Brenley, Maisy and Leni.
The family wishes to thank Mark and all the staff at the Charleswood Care Centre for their compassionate care of Hal.
Cremation has taken place. A family memorial will be held at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)
A true gentleman! A staunch supporter of Charleswood United Church. I have fond memories of him sitting in a pew behind me on Sundays and always shaking hands and inquiring after Barbara. Condolences to Coralie and the family. - Posted by: Bruce Berven (Friend from Charleswood United Church) on: Aug 07, 2019
Jim, Bob, Jeff and Coralie: I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your father and of course extend my thoughts to Coralie. We had such a great friendship that was initially established through our business relationship and of course expanded into a great personal friendship. The World was a better place with Hel in it. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. God Bless, Jim Quail - Posted by: Jim Quail (Friend ) on: Jul 25, 2019
Coralie you have many years of wonderful memories. You are in my thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Dianne Pollreis (Cousin of Coralie) on: Jul 22, 2019
Hal was one of the best! Powerful work ethic! Unbelievable struggles in early years. Tough, exasperating at times (like all of us). Hal did it his way for sure. Doted on Coralie. We bought many chickens from the Hutterites together! He was on a first name basis with them all out there, so we always got great deals. Rest in peace, buddy! God knows you've earned it. We have many wonderful memories of Hal and Coralie from their time at Rivers Edge RV Resort in Winterhaven, CA. Hal was so gracious and kind. His favourite comment (although he had many) was, "Do you know how much I love that woman?" referring to Coralie of course. Then I'd get a hug. So I made sure that I always got him to ask that question. If you're listening Hal, I miss your hugs. My deepest condolences to his family and to Coralie and family. - Posted by: Sue & Bob Burns (Friends from Rivers Edge) on: Jul 20, 2019
Frans and I shared many good times over the years with Hal and Coralie, in Canada and the USA. Hal was a good friend to us and a loving partner to Coralie and will be sorely missed. Condolences to Coralie and Hal's family. Diane Ellsworth and family - Posted by: Diane Ellsworth (Friend) on: Jul 14, 2019
