October 11, 1931 - November 30, 2018

Arthur Johannes Sigurdson, known to many as "Joe", was a lifelong resident of Winnipeg, living here for 87 years. After a long struggle with cancer, he was admitted to Grace Hospital around noon on November 30 and passed away at 7:30 p.m. His passage was peaceful and with little pain.
Joe was the eldest son of Dr. Larus Arthur Sigurdson and Helen Page Sigurdson. Joe grew up on Home Street and went to Laura Secord School and Gordon Bell High School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba in 1953. He also took some classes at Law School. During the summers, Joe worked in the mines at Flin Flon; he also worked at the family store, Sigurdssons Limited, in Arborg and briefly for the Canadian Pacific Railway.
In February of 1957, Joe joined the Finance Department of Air Canada. Working for the airline gave Joe the opportunity to explore his love of travel. He was able to visit Reykjavik, Iceland and cities across Canada and the United States. After 39 and a half years of service, Joe retired from Air Canada in August, 1996.
Joe enjoyed spending weekends and summers at his family cottage in Gimli, Manitoba on Lake Winnipeg. His favourite hobbies were windsurfing, reading and enjoying fine food. Being a part of the Icelandic community in Winnipeg, Joe had a keen interest in his heritage. He was a familiar face to many of the Icelandic diaspora in the area. He had a passion for current events, and was never shy to stir up a friendly debate among friends, family and neighbours. He was an active member at Young United Church and McClure United Church.
Joe was a devoted son to his parents and after they passed, he lived with his Aunt Stefania on Dominion Street. After her death at age 90, he continued to live on Dominion Street until the night before he passed away. We are grateful for the compassionate palliative care Joe received during the last several months of his life.
Joe is survived by his brother, Dr. Jon Sigurdson, sister-in-law Margaret of Piedmont, California and sister-in-law Jane of Comox, BC. Joe is predeceased by his younger brother Eric, older sister Frances and nephew Joe. He is also survived by his many beloved nieces and nephews including Janet, Fred, Eric, Helen, Leif, Lara, Stefania and over a dozen grandnieces and nephews.
Joe is buried at the Hnausa West Cemetery. A graveside "Celebration of Life" will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. for friends and family. In addition, Joe will be remembered during the August 4, 2019 Sunday morning service at McClure United Church at 533 Greenwood Place in Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, hug someone you love.
