JOYCE ELIZABETH SCHWARTZ
(née CHALLIS)

On June 21, 2019 Joyce Elizabeth Schwartz, at the age of 82 and sixty two years of marriage, passed away peacefully at St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg.
She is survived by her husband George, sons, David (Gitta), Donald (Brenda) and Dale (Ru), grandchildren, Eric (Sherry), Amanda, Samantha, Kayleigh Allie and Troy, great-grandchildren, Kimberly, Xander, Dominic, Jude, Brady, Jaxson, Camden, Tatum and Noah, as well as brothers, John (Janice) and Jim (Ione), and many nieces and nephews
Joyce was born in Crane Valley, Saskatchewan and moved to Winnipeg at the age of five. In spite of her brief residency in Saskatchewan she was a life-long Rider fan, much to the chagrin of the rest of her family.
Her greatest pleasure was gardening. She started off helping her father when he entered competitions around Winnipeg. She then embarked on her own, joining the St. Vital Agricultural Society and soon began beating him to become a multi-prize winner with multiple aggregate ribbons. She was on the board of directors for over 40 years, serving as director, secretary/treasurer and treasurer. She was honoured with a life membership.
Her sons were encouraged to participate in the competition as junior gardeners and they managed to win prizes as well. Her love of gardening is now being passed on to her great-grandchildren.
Joyce was a Square Dancer and a Round Dancer. She taught George to keep off of her toes and the difference between allemande left and allemande right.
There were countless family celebrations at her home and she never wanted anyone go hungry. Her refrain of "No leftovers!" was commonly heard.
After retiring from the Board of Grain Commissioners (now Canadian Grain Commission) as a typist, she embarked on a part time career in the cash office of The Bay warehouse, downtown, and St. Vital stores. Her last job was secretary at Regent's Park (now St. Mary's Road) United Church.
She was baptised as a member of Regent's Park in 1963 and taught junior classes for some time.
Our cottage at Brewster Bay north of Gimli provided us with many years of enjoyment together with many guests.
Her family is grateful for the compassion and concern of the doctors, nurses and health care personnel of St. Boniface Unit 4B who were so gracious in their consideration for her care and the accommodations made for us.
According to her wishes cremation has taken place and a private gathering was held to celebrate her life.

  • I have known the Schwartz family all my life. I knew her as a devoted mom, wife and gardener. I have many happy memories of time with her family and being in her home as a teenager. She had a wonderful laugh! My condolences to the family. Nancy - Posted by: Nancy Blokland (Friend from Regents Park United) on: Jul 23, 2019
