December 18, 1939 - June 9, 2019

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Catherine Sklavenitis.
Born in Patras, Greece, Catherine immigrated to Canada in the late 1950s.
She became a hairdresser after training at Marvel Beauty School. Later on, she worked with her husband John at their restaurant the Original Food Bar. She also ran the Country Girl with friend Vaso Fatouros.
An active member of the Greek community in Winnipeg, she volunteered her time to help those in need.
In 1987, she and her family moved back to Greece, to live in the village of Vathi on the island of Meganisi. She enjoyed gardening and was devoted to her family.
She took a trip back to Winnipeg in 2018, visiting old friends and family, and once again fell in love with the place she called her home for 30 years.
Her infectious laugh, kindheartedness and resilient spirit will be greatly missed.
She was predeceased by her husband John in 2014.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Marina (Tina) and Constantino (Vana), grandchildren, Anthony, Katerina and Gianno, and relatives in Canada and Greece.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Catina was one of the last and closest of our relatives that was originally sponsored to come to Canada by my father Victor and Catina’s aunt my mother Barbara. I remember when she arrived in Winnipeg and stayed with us until she met her future husband and also our cousin John. We have very fond memories of the wonderful times we shared together with our family and the times we visited her on our beautiful island of Vathy. Most recently when she came to Winnipeg she came to stay with us in Vancouver and got to reunite with our children my sister and my brother. God bless Catina your kids Costa and Marina and grandchildren. On a positive not she will finally be united with her beloved husband John once again. Our sincere love and wishes to all her family and extended family Theodoros (Terry) and Santina Sklavenitis - Posted by: Terry Sklavenitis (Cousin) on: Jul 21, 2019
