BENNY KONOWALCHUK

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our friend, Dad and Gigi, Benny Harold Konowalchuk on June 12, 2019.
He was predeceased by his wife Alice (Lesia) on July 8, 2009.
Our dad was born in Winnipeg on November 13, 1943. Lesia and Benny were married on September 19, 1964 and together they built a new home in West St. Paul and lived there from 1968 until he could no longer. They had three sons, Glen (Cindy) grandson Tyler; Walter (Angela); and Andrew (Susan) grandsons, Nathan and Jacob.
Dad was particularly proud of his work as a machinist with Winnipeg Transit for over 30 years, retiring in 1999. He enjoyed using his creativity as a machinist to make specialised parts at work and as a volunteer with the Manitoba Transit Heritage Association, where he was president for many years. Most of all Dad enjoyed restoring and showing Bus 111 a 1937 Twin Coach. He had also converted a 1968 GMC bus named "Scrap Iron" into a motorhome which we used to explore all over Canada and US on our summer holidays. In retirement, he downsized to his little Boler trailer and our parents drove coast to coast to coast. Dad was an active ham radio operator under the call sign of VE4AIS. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Theresa Council.
The world lost an amazing man. A "Jack of all trades, master of all". Our mentor and a son's best friend. A real superhero. The reason why I do the things I do and know the things I know. He made me the man I am and made me a better man than I ever could have been without him. He taught us the value of hard work and encouraged us to work with our hands at a young age and through adulthood. From dirt bikes, restoring cars and building houses he was always there to lend a hand and his wisdom. He will forever be remembered, even if one day our memory fades as his did. An incredible friend to all that knew him. And an even more incredible father, grandfather, husband, uncle and son.

Vichnaya pamyat. You will be missed.

Our family is grateful to all our friends and family who provided support and strength to our family during this difficult time and in particular to Carolina Meseric, who remained an unfaltering friend to Dad throughout his illness. We are extremely appreciative.
Cremation has taken place and prayers will held on Saturday, September 14, 2019 11:30 a.m. at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, 3597 Main St., West St. Paul, MB. Interment to follow.
Many thanks to the great staff at Actionmarguerite, Unit 5AB who cared for Dad through his many stages of dementia. Thank you to the staff at the Middlechurch Home who took care of him for his final days.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to Manitoba Transit Heritage Association or a charity of your choice.
