ROBERT CYRIL SHARMAN
1947 - 2019

Robert Sharman left on his final cruise on Tuesday, July 23, this one without a return ticket.
He was predeceased by parents, Cam and Jean and survived by brothers, Doug (Nancy) and Terry (Kim), nieces and nephews, and great-nephews and niece.
Bob grew up in St. Vital, living on Elm Park Road and Bronstone Boulevard. He attended Glenlawn Collegiate and Red River College, where he took what passed for computer training in those days. This he parlayed into a career in computers at various airlines and related businesses. He also managed to fit in a couple of years sailing the Caribbean as a deckhand on rental yachts, and several wives and lovers. His love of sailing continued with yearly (or more often) cruises throughout the world.
In 1979 he moved to the west coast and enjoyed hiking in the Vancouver area for many years. The cost of living and illness brought him back to Winnipeg two years ago. He recognized and accepted he was coming home to die, after extending the original prognosis of three months to more than three years by fighting the cancer that killed him (while still smoking cigarettes), and all the while praising the Canadian medical system and the MAID program. He made a point of starting his final journey wearing clean underwear (as his mom had always taught him).
At Bob's request, there will not be a formal service.
If friends desire, donations in Bob's memory may be made to the Richmond Hospital in Vancouver, the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I first met Bob when I started work at Air Canada as a computer operator in Winnipeg. Bob showed me the ropes and put the traveling bug in my ear. Bob left for Antigua and I followed him shortly after. I joined Bob on the yacht Redonda on which he was working at the time. Months passed in Antigua where we worked on different yachts and we finally parted ways. Both of us being carefree spirits, I will always remember the great times we had both in Winnipeg and in the West Indies. Till we meet again my friend . . . - Posted by: Al Jennings (Travelling friend) on: Sep 15, 2021

  • I originally met Bob in Toronto in the automotive computer industry. I helped process the keypunching on the weekends and we usually started the run and then headed out back to smoke something while it processed.:). We had lost touch over the years and recently started talking and remembering old times and discussing how all this sucked! The good news was that it did happen because Bob stayed in touch with an old flame of mine who he loved over the years as a good friend. (That's what he told me. Ha!). Now we are in touch again thanks to Bob. Look forward to twisting one up together when my turn comes and catching up! Be at peace my friend. - Posted by: Allan Bird (Friend) on: Sep 17, 2019

  • When you live your life to the fullest, going on the final cruise which, from what I've heard, is spectacular can only be met with a huge smile. It's been literally 51 years since I left St Vital and Glenlawn but knew Doug and Bob in my misspent youth and remember them all fondly. I'm Free - Unknown Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free, I'm following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I've found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My Life's been full, I savoured much, Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch, Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free. - Posted by: Andrew (Andy) J Taylor (School Friend) on: Aug 25, 2019

  • Well said Brian; only met Bob when he moved back to Winnipeg but he certainly handled his challenge well and without remorse. Enjoyed our brief friendship! - Posted by: Donald Tomac (Buddy!) on: Aug 02, 2019
