ONA SHAW

It is with sadness that we say goodbye to our Mother and Grandmother, Ona Shaw. Ona passed peacefully on July 21, 2019, in Edmonton at the age of 89.
Ona was predeceased by her husband, John, in 2006. She is survived by her adult children, Fiona, Alan and Andrew; daughters-in-law, Julie and Sandy; and grandchildren, Caitlin, Georgia and Braeden. She enjoyed being Grandma to her Australian family, Kasharny, Madison and Luke. Left to mourn is her "heart sister" and lifelong best friend, Hutzi.
Born in Scotland and raised in the city of Glasgow, Ona met her future husband, John Alexander Magill Shaw, while working as a pharmacy assistant. They began their family life in Scotland and later moved to John's hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Here, Ona became part of the Shaw "clan," a time of great joy for her. Especially dear to her heart was John's younger sister, Martha.
In 1967, the family immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Ona embraced her new country. She was an active community volunteer. Passionate about tennis, she developed enduring friendships while a member of the Wildwood Tennis Club.
In 2016, Ona moved to Edmonton to be closer to family. She enjoyed several years of independence at the Rosedale Seniors' Living Residence. When her health declined, the Rosedale staff cared and supported her, for which the family will be forever grateful.
Cremation has taken place at Serenity Funeral Service in Edmonton. Messages to family can be left on Ona's memorial page at www.serenity.ca.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ona's name may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
