  • Wonderful memories of my friend and colleague Nestor Gylywoychuk, the friendly giant as he was often refered to. We taught together at the original Arthur Day School Jr. High, which later became Park Circle school. Our paths often passed over the next 50 years, as we shared many common interests, activities, & friends. Every visit entailed great conversations & lots of laughter. Our last great visit was at a retirees breakfast. The next few times I attended one of these breakfasts, I looked for him as I loved to visit with him. My condolences to Joan and their family. I will miss him. - Posted by: Earl White (colleague ) on: Aug 13, 2019

  • I am very sad to learn of Nestor's passing. Approximately 55 years ago Nestor was doing some tutoring at a college in downtown Winnipeg (Avenue Building?) and he tried his best to help me with Math. years later I met up with Nestor through his brother Ernie and Donna. He loved to fish and tell jokes. Great legacy. Best to all the Gylywoychuk family. Dave Johnson - Posted by: David L. Johnson (Friend) on: Aug 06, 2019

  • I will always remember Mr. G. as a remarkable leader and a man that was so well liked by his staff and students. I owe Nestor heartfelt thanks as he gave me my start as an EA. I was regularly volunteering in my daughter’s class at BWCS and after a few weeks I noticed that Mr. G was watching me. One day he asked me to come to his office before I left. I was somewhat nervous and wondered what I had done wrong. He went on to say he liked my approach and rapport with the students and asked if I would be interested in being on the substitution list. I agreed and after a few months of subbing I found myself hired as a regular employee. I am still working as an EA and just celebrated my 25th year of service. Thank you Nestor for believing in me and giving the opportunity. I will be forever thankful. RIP. My sincere condolences to Joan, your children and their families. - Posted by: Sharlene Keenas (Co-worker) on: Aug 06, 2019

  • He was a great principal. Very good teacher. Very nice person. Respect is earned. - Posted by: Ward Stewart (Student ) on: Aug 05, 2019

  • Sadness and emotions of grief dominated my day upon hearing of Mr. Gylywoychuk's sudden passing. Mr. Gylywoychuk and I first became acquainted at Arthur Day Junior High in the early sixties. I had the good fortune of having been taught Math by this illustrious teacher. It was not until 1971 that Mr. Gylywoychuk and I were to cross paths again; he and I played fastball on the same team, Dal's in Transcona"s four team league. At the end of the fastball season, I moved to begin my teaching career in The Pas. After 5 years in The Pas, we moved back to Transcona to take a teaching position in Anola Then an opportunity presented itself to become a member of JOHN W GUNN JUNIOR HIGH'S STAFF with Mr. GYLYWOYCHUK as the Principal and Leader of our staff and student body. While a member of that staff, Mr. Gylywoychuk was true to form....he was instrumental in putting together a slo pitch team, that had us come together as a true family. As I had said at my retirement, I taught at many schools in Minnesota and Manitoba, but the most fun and enjoyment I experienced was at JWG. One of the main reasons... NESTOR was our PRINCIPAL. HIS LEADERSHIP qualities and charisma was seldom paralleled. Those QUALITIES WERE SO REVERED that the School Trustees turned to Mr. Gylywoychuk to provide leadership and organization for Bernie Wolfe Community School at a time of extreme necessity. He did not fail the Trustees and The Community. This I know because the Chairperson had taken me in her confidence at a fund raiser. I believe this speaks highly of the respect Nestor had gained and earned from the BOARD OF TRUSTEES and I dare say Transcona as a whole. I have much to say about how much I cared for Mr.Gylywoychuk; I hope I was able to display that emotion. THE GOOD LORD DECIDED THAT HE NEEDED A TRUE LEADER TO SIT BY HIS SIDE TO OVERSEE HIS KINGDOM. Mr.Gylywoychuk until we meet again may your earthly Spirit guide your loved ones and friends to make wise decisions during their time on earth. I WILL MISS YOU AND YOUR LAUGHTER. IN THOUGHT AND PRAYERS FOR Wife, JOAN, SONS, DAVID AND DUANE, DAUGHTER, WENDY AND THEIR ENTIRE FAMILIES. - VICKI AND FRANKIE DE MARCHI - Posted by: Frankie De Marchi (Friend) on: Aug 05, 2019

  • I owe a lot to Mr. G. When I was in junior high. He knew I couldn't afford a drum set but he let me stay after school and practice by myself. He also let me take home pieces of equipment as I built up my set with my paperboy money. He did this for years and always checked on me and encouraged me. Well 10 years later, I became the first musician without a degree to join the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. I credit this to his kindness and inspiration. God bless sir. - Posted by: Grant Barry (Student) on: Aug 04, 2019

  • Sending you my deepest sympathy! Your Dad was an exceptional man! He was a well respected educator, a fantastic family man and a kind warm hearted person! I used to love coming to your home when hanging out with Wendy and just chatting and laughing. Sending all of you my love and sympathy and an extra big hug to your Mom. I know how special Dads are and I know he will be greatly missed.
