MARGARET FRANCES COLWILL
April 18, 1921 - July 30, 2019
Mom was born in Winnipeg to Frank and Selina Graban.
She was predeceased be her daughter Laura; granddaughter Alize; and her son-in-law Peter Lockett. Mom is survived by her children, Virginia, Kelay (Larry) and Peter (Angela); and grandchildren, Madisen, Maurghen and Carson, all of whom have fond memories of her.
Mom lived a long and wonderful life. After completing a degree in Home Economics at the University of Manitoba, she volunteered overseas with the Canadian Red Cross Corps during the Second World War and worked in London at the Maple Leaf Club. While in London she met many Canadian and allied service members and never forgot their sacrifices. Mom was awarded the Canadian Voluntary Service medal in recognition of her work overseas.
Margaret loved watching horse races first at Polo Park and later at Assiniboia Downs. Summers were spent at Lester Beach where she enjoyed watching sunsets over the lake. Mom always enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, a rum on the deck and having her family around the dinner table.
Our thanks go to the wonderful staff at West Park Manor for caring for our lady in purple.
The family has held a private memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Marg (Mrs. Colwill to me) was a larger than life figure in my childhood. Always friendly, opinionated, irreverent and very funny. And she was a great friend and confidante to my mom, Betty. The purple interior of the Colwill home, and the basement rec room, will always be in my memories. My sincere condolences to you all. - Posted by: Doug Shearer (Neighbour) on: Sep 25, 2019
Virginia, Kelay, Peter and family, sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. I was able to visit with your mom both at the Shaftesbury and West Park where I too have family members. I also have so many fond memories of spending time with Laura. Thinking of you, Marilyn - Posted by: Marilyn Humphreys (Sedun) (Friend of Laura) on: Aug 16, 2019
I was saddened to hear of your dear Mom's passing. I clearly remember her beauty from Lester Beach many, many moons ago. Also saddened to hear of Laura's death. I am still in the same cottage and each and every time we drive by your old place I always say "that's where the Colwill beauties lived"! Sadly it's no longer purple! May they rest in peace. - Posted by: Helen Gurinow (Friend of Laura) on: Aug 03, 2019
Sorry for your loss Pete. Your mom was a lovely person. Jan - Posted by: Janett Hines (old friend) on: Aug 03, 2019
My deepest sympathies to the family. Your mom always put up with our (Laura and I) antics throughout our childhood with a smile. Also stunned to hear of Laura's passing...friend gone way too soon. - Posted by: Jill Bright (Family friend) on: Aug 03, 2019
Dear Virginia, Kelay & Peter & your families, My sincere condolences on the passing of your mum. Margaret was a childhood friend of my dad’s. I met her in the 70s when I became a friend of Laura’s. She was always so warm and welcoming. I remember her love of purple. I was at her cottage shortly after she had painted it (purple, of course!) and I remember that there was even purple paint on the blades of grass beside the cottage :) She was a lovely and gracious lady. Sincerely, Georgia - Posted by: Georgia (Lees) Klass (Friend of Laura) on: Aug 03, 2019
