DANIEL JAMES MARTIN

Daniel James Martin, 61, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2019, at Health Sciences Centre, after an illness.
He was born on November 28, 1957, on the Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation. He was placed in a residential school and then was in a variety of foster homes.
Daniel was well known as a gifted artist among his communities in Winnipeg. Self taught from the age of 24, he developed his own distinctive Woodlands style using coloured marker pens to create drawings of First Nations motifs and teachings. His original pieces can be found in many homes and businesses.
Daniel will be missed by many friends from all walks of life, yet his art will live on.
A celebration of Daniel's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 15, 2019, at his congregation, First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor Street, Winnipeg. Bardal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I met Daniel when I was an RN at Selkirk General Hospital in 1997. He walked over from SMHC and showed us his paintings. I was struck by how beautiful they were and briefly spoke to him. The one he had with him was called "Voice in the Wind" and I bought it from him. I asked how much and he said that he needed art supplies and, with a smile said maybe some cigarettes. I happily gave him money and he asked me what I love, as far as birds, animals, mammals and I told him. He came to find me at the hospital to show me what he'd drawn for me. I have five of his paintings that I will treasure always. He was such a sweet man and a genius...I only wish I'd stayed in touch and perhaps have helped him. • I am extremely saddened to hear of Danny’s passing. My deepest condolences go out to his loved ones. I have known Danny for many years, he became one of my sweetest friends. I first met Danny when I was the Administrator Of Madison Lodge. He dropped in from Selkirk to visit friends living at the Madison during that time. Danny was introduced to me and when I found out that he was an artist, I insisted that he show me his work. He pulled out his portfolio and began showing me all of his beautiful paintings. I was astounded. Danny just smiled and said they were nothing. I informed him that he must never say that again, his work was brilliant. We became fast friends that day. A couple of weeks later, Danny stopped by again but this time, he came directly to my office and handed me a brown wrapped package and told me it was his gift to me. I opened the package, it was the beautiful drawing that I had admired all coloured in and neatly framed. I couldn’t believe it. I still have that painting and several more as I insisted that I would pay him for more of his work. In 2011, I went to Europe, Danny’s one wish was to have his art in other countries. That year, I purchased several more of Danny’s paintings and took them overseas. Family and friends in England, Scotland, Gibraltar, Spain, France, and Portugal all have one of Danny’s paintings. Danny was thrilled when I returned and told him. The very last time I saw Danny was after I had left the Madison and retired; it was in Selkirk a few years ago. As we always did, we hugged and then he proceeded to show me some new works that he had recently completed, he said that they were sold and he was in the process of delivering them. I was so proud of him. I will truly miss this man I called my friend, our meetings were very short and spread apart but, it was always a joy to see him. Meegwetch, Danny you brought so much to my life. Now paint with the Angels, sweet friend. - Posted by: Susan Hall-Amado (Friend ) on: Aug 16, 2019

  • So sorry to hear of your passing Daniel. I only knew you from seeing you downtown and your beautiful artwork. Now you can fly with the eagles and make even more beautiful art. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Colleen (Friend) on: Aug 13, 2019

  • I was saddened to hear of Danny Martin's death. I bought 2 of his paintings for 15.00, at a hotel in Selkirk, many many years ago. They will only grow in value, for the artist will make no more. I would also see him walking the streets in Selkirk with his black portfolio swinging from his hand as he sought buyers for his drawings. I was shocked one day, as I was riding the bus into Winnipeg to work, and there was Danny, and his swinging portfolio, walking down Portage Avenue! I knew of his background, and troubles he'd had, probably still had, but to see him striding down Portage Avenue with his treasures of exceptional talent inside his black case, made me so proud of him. He had surely suffered a troubled life, but to see him look so confident, made my eyes water. This man had made it! He had truly made it, and with his loss, my heart goes out to his family and friends and the many admirers of his work. May the winds blow gently over your resting place, Danny Martin, though you are not there, but in the clouds and beyond, with your ancestors and my ancestors, forever under the Creator's watchful gaze. Bless you. Meegwetch, Danny. I will treasure my paintings the rest of my life. - Posted by: Marie Fontaine (Admirer) on: Aug 10, 2019
