LAURIE LYNN TURKO
October 16, 1973 - August 12, 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Laurie Lynn Turko, on August 12, 2019, at Health Sciences Centre, after a courageous battle with ALS.
Laurie was born on October 16, 1973 in Winnipeg, MB, and is survived by her parents, Edward and Sophie Turko, brother Jeffrey Turko, and family in Manitoba, Ontario and Alberta.
Laurie grew up in St. Vital, Winnipeg, and attended Christ the King School and church, where she was an altar server. She enjoyed attending Brownies and Girl Guides, with her mom as group leader. Laurie became involved in her love for dance, by attending tap, and Ukrainian classes at a young age. She went on to attend Holy Cross, and St. Boniface Diocesan schools, and graduated from Glenlawn Collegiate in 1991, and then moved with her family to East St. Paul, MB.
Growing up she loved spending time with her family camping and at her grandparents' farm in Stonewall, MB. In 1997 she worked at Club Regent Casino, and later McPhillips Casino until 2011, when she pursued her childhood dream of becoming a registered nurse. In 2016 Laurie graduated with her Bachelor of Nursing degree from Red River College. She began her nursing career caring for others in Family Medicine at Concordia Hospital, until September 2018. Laurie loved fashion, dancing, Zumba classes and spending time with family and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Karen Braun for over 25 years of compassionate care, and the kindness of Pastor Shane Brothers. The family would also like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Stephan Pacin, the team at the ALS clinic, and Dr. Andrew Dyck, the amazing staff at Riverview especially nurse Lyle Kucharsky, the staff at Palliative Home Care, HSC, Dr. David Rush, nurse Tricia Carte of The Gift of Life, and the team at Transplant Manitoba. Much gratitude to the friends and family who provided care, visited and supported Laurie during her journey.
The Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, September 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Concordia Avenue Church of God, 705 Concordia Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.
In lieu of flowers, if family and friends wish, they can donate in Laurie's honour to the ALS Society of Manitoba, www.alsmb.ca, or Crosspoint Community Church, www.crosspointcommunitychurch.ca.

  • I was saddened to hear of Laurie's passing. Many days when I would feel down at work, she would know just what to say to put a smile on my face. We would laugh, tell jokes and stories and listen to way to much loud music in the countroom. We had gone our seperate ways, but from time to time when I would find myself feeling down, the memories of all of those crazy over night shifts that we all shared would pick me up. Thank you my friend Laurie for always knowing what to say to bring a smile to my face. To the Turko family, I offer my deepest condolences, the world has truely lost a one of it's finest. - Posted by: Chris Fedak (Co-worker at Manitoba Lotteries) on: Aug 14, 2019
