RUTH MAY GILL
(nee HILL)
January 23, 1923 - August 14, 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ruth at the age of 96, on Tuesday, August 14, 2019, yet with joyful hearts that she is with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Ruth is lovingly remembered by her sister Helen and sisters-in-law, Marion Hill and Edith Kerr. Her many nieces and nephews have found memories of their dear Aunt Ruth, as well as neighbours and friends.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband Elmer, parents, George and Lillian Hill; sisters, Margaret, Hazel and Grace and brothers, George and Fred.
Ruth was born in the family home on Furby Street. After high school she attended Normal School where she met Elmer Gill, her loving husband of 58 years. Ruth taught grade one at Aberdeen, John M. King and Sargent Park schools. Her passion was to teach children to read so that schooling was off to great start for them.
Ruth's faith in her Saviour Jesus Christ was the sustaining strength to the end of her life. She had continual interest and support for the outreach of Christian missions.
The family wants to thank the staff at the Health Sciences Centre for providing the utmost care for our dear one.
The funeral service will be on Monday, August 19, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg, with viewing prior to service. Interment at St. John's Cemetery.
If people so desire, a donation can be made in Ruth's memory to Bible for Children, P.O. Box 3, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2G1. The ministry was dear to Ruth.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Miss Hill, as she was known to me, was such a wonderful grade one teacher at Aberdeen School. I am now almost 78 years old and still remember her gentle, kind manner. I now live at the west coast but access the Free Press obits daily and besides the obvious aging, she still looks like our Miss Hill. - Posted by: Irene Melnyk Swanton (Student) on: Aug 17, 2019

  • Mrs. Gill was my first grade teacher at Sargent Park School! I have the fondest memories of her kindness and obvious love for all of her students. I lived a block over from her, but growing up would often go for a visit where she was always welcoming and available to chat. After moving back as an adult and walking by with my own kids in strollers, she was still always welcoming and smiling. My condolences to the family of this remarkable woman. - Posted by: Lilja Tonnellier (Former student, community neighbor) on: Aug 17, 2019

  • Ruth was my first grade teacher, neighbor and our friend. She and Elmer were amazing to our family and to everyone on the block. Their home Bible clubs were so much fun. It was there that I became a Christian. They both remained dear to us all our growing years and even stayed in touch as our own families grew. Ruth was always genuinely happy to see us and learn about our families. We always felt comfortable and welcome when we stopped by on a walk. She was never in a rush to say good bye always wanting to catch up and give love and encouragement. Ruth was a jewel of a woman and our loss is heavens gain. Thinking of you in your time of loss. Thanking you for sharing her. - Posted by: Dominion Unrau family (Former students and friends ) on: Aug 17, 2019
