WINIFRED JOAN SIGURDSON
March 12, 1920 - August 22, 2019

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Joan Sigurdson on Thursday, August 22, 2019.
Joan will be forever remembered by her sons, Bryan (Cyndi) and Barry; and grandchildren, Bryanna (Jordan), Bryttany and Brydan (Anya). Her nieces and nephews will miss their Auntie Joan and her remaining good friends will also cherish her memory. We were all blessed to have had her with us for so long.
Joan was predeceased by her husband Gestur; parents, Arthur and Elsie; brother Roy and sister-in-law Rowene; and a stillborn infant son.
Joan was born in Birmingham, England. She moved to Canada with her parents at a young age and lived most of her life on Bowman Avenue in East Kildonan. Joan married Gestur Sigurdson in 1946. They were together for 46 years until Dad's passing in 1992.
Mom was briefly hospitalized before her passing but until then was able to live in her "own wee hoose". That had always been her hope. From within its friendly confines, she watched the Bomber and Jet games, and episodes of The Young and the Restless. Mom had a sweet tooth and was known for baking her world famous chocolate chip cookies. Although she downplayed her singing talent, with a little prompting she would deliver a brilliant rendition of "I'll Be Seeing You" or another wartime classic.
In her later years, Joan enjoyed the visits of family and friends. Above all else, though, her grandchildren were a source of immense pride and joy. She followed their exploits and looked forward to their calls.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Johnson and Dr. Hebbard for looking after Mom so well for so many years; the staff at Concordia Hospital for their care and compassion; and Luisa, Donna and Crystal from home care for the kindness they showed to Mom over the last 20 months.
A celebration of Joan's life will take place at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 30 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The Salvation Army or to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • She may of been a wee woman who lived in a wee house. Joan loved to entertain visitors with her rich black coffee and homemade cookies. She was well versed on current affairs, therefore was able to keep a conversation for the duration. She enjoyed talking about her husband and his participation in the War effort. We are all so Happy for her thoughtful personality and love for family and friends. - Posted by: John Frederick Sigurdson (Nephew) on: Aug 27, 2019
