EDWARD (TED) CHARLES HUNTER
July 8, 1933 - August 24, 2019

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather on Saturday, August 24, 2019.
Ted passed away peacefully at Misericordia Hospital surrounded by his loving and caring family.
He was predeceased by his first wife Donna of 21 years in 1979, brother-in-law Bill MacCharles in 2001, and sister Joyce MacCharles in 2009.
Ted is lovingly remembered by his wife of 32 years, Karen; sons, Glen (Penny), Brian; stepdaughter Lisa (Tim); grandchildren, Cody, Taylor, Roxanne (Jamie), Haley, Brittany (Tyler), Stephanie (Derek), and great-grandchildren.
Ted lived his entire life in Winnipeg, settling in East Kildonan, near Morse Place Community Centre. It was on the hockey rinks and baseball fields of Morse Place that Ted thrived, teaching his sons to play hockey and baseball while coaching other youth in the neighborhood. Ted also served as a sports convener for the Red River Valley Sports League. During the summers time was spent at Jessica lake, with Joyce, Bill, nephew Rod, and nieces, Linda and Brenda.
Ted's entire working career was spent with the Canadian National Railway, working primarily out of the Transcona Shop. In 1988, Ted accepted a golden handshake and retired.
In 1987, Ted married Karen Babiak and started a brand-new chapter in his life, including six new brothers and sisters-in-law.
For the next 30 years Ted would always be there for family and friends and would never miss a special gathering, birthday party or sporting event which his grandchildren participated in. Everyone enjoyed Ted's storytelling, as he shared specific details and accounts of events and experiences for all to enjoy. Ted was a handyman who stayed within his limits, if he thought he could fix it, he'd give it a go, if not he'd tell you plain and simple. Ted had strong convictions on things and wouldn't let anyone change his mind. Whether the topic was about sports, entertainment, politics, morals or ethics, he believed what he believed, and he called a spade a spade, a most admirable character trait. He volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels and prided himself in serving others when he was retired.
Ted was a loving, caring and loyal husband. He was a proud father, grandpa, and a reliable friend. Finally, Ted was a gentleman always saying please and thank you.
Over the past two years, Ted began to experience stages of dementia, which over time had a diminishing effect on his health. He spent the past four months being cared for by the staff at Misericordia Hospital. The family would like to thank the staff for their care throughout his stay, specifically their care in his final weeks.
As per Ted's wishes a formal funeral service will not be held, rather all friends and family are welcome to attend a celebration of Ted's life on Sunday, September 8, between 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at The Canad Inns Centre Club Regent Casino Hotel, 1415 Regent Avenue West.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I know that there are people today who owe their love of sports and many of their life skills to the people such as Ted and my own father, Henry "Hank" who made the Red River Valley Sports League so successful in its time. The league lives on today in the group that organizes many minor sports teams and competitions in North East Winnipeg. Gone, but certainly NOT forgotten. Thank you for your service to the youth of the area. - Posted by: Rick Dondo (Son of fellow RRV Board member) on: Aug 31, 2019

  • My condolences to Brian and family. I worked with Ted @ Symington yard in the early eighties. He was one of the most fun as well as solid guys that I can recall. The world would be a better place if there were more people like Ted was..Rip.. - Posted by: Mike Henry (Co worker ) on: Aug 31, 2019

  • We have many very fond memories of Ted as our neighbor and baseball coach. It was such a pleasure reconnecting and reminiscing at Ted's 80th birthday party. Our heartfelt condolences Karen and family. The Wilsons - Posted by: The Wilson's ((Friends and former neighbors)) on: Aug 31, 2019
