It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill McGarva on August 29, 2019, with family by his side.
Bill was born in Winnipeg on September 23, 1943. The family lived on Maryland Street until 1958. He attended John M. King and General Wolfe Schools. Friendships were made during these early years that continued to this day. His Free Press route from Ellice Avenue to Portage Avenue was how Bill saved enough carrier income to buy his prized used three speed Raleigh bicycle. High school was Daniel McIntyre. These were the days of hanging out and just enough study time to graduate in 1961.
In 1965 Alice entered Bill's life and they were married on October 15, 1966. A side benefit to this wonderful marriage was his introduction to farm life at Alice's parents place near Anola. This is where fun things were always an integral part of farm activities. Around this time Bill's parents bought a cottage at Twin Beaches, which also resulted in many memorable times.
Bill, a Chartered Professional Accountant, had careers with the Government of Canada and the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba. Many "special" friendships were developed at these workplaces.
Since 1982 Bill and Alice's pride and joy was their home in Woodhaven. Simple pleasures were always on the menu at this household. The daily Jumbo quiz, card games and yard games were always an enjoyable part of home life, especially when friends and family visited.
Bill was always keen on travel. Favourite destinations included Hawaii, Florida, California, Las Vegas and many more. Whether curling, golfing, slow pitch, baseball or pickle ball, Bill's understated wit and genuine compassion always won over new groups of friends.
Bill's stoic outlook and positive handling of life's medical detours only brought added respect for this remarkable husband, brother and friend.
Alongside Alice, Bill is survived by sisters, Margaret Newton and Dorothy Herron (Sheldon); brother Don and sister-in-law Pat, plus eight super nieces and nephews, and their much-loved cat Corky. He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Sally, his brother Gordon earlier this year, and brother-in-law Bud Newton.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at ANAVETS Assiniboia Unit 283, 3584 Portage Ave. from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27, 2019.
A special thanks to all relatives and friends who have helped us at this difficult time.
Donations in memory of Bill could be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, CancerCare Manitoba, or a charity of choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I have many fond memories of Bill, as we shared our childhood years growing up together living 2 houses away from each other on Maryland Street--same age, same schools and many like interests. I remember so many times calling on you to come out and play and hang around and over the years we grew a friendship that lasted all these years later even after I moved from Winnipeg we kept in touch. My mind is overflowing with good memories, too many to list here now but those baseball/curling teams, etc we were on and the fun we had is something Irene and I treasure even today. You were the first in the "gang" to have a drivers licence and a car"the old hillman model" that had no heat in the winter as we drove to the U of M. Most of all your funny, dry, easy sense of humor" especially after a few sips" kept us all in stitches and a good time was had by all when you were at the party. My heart goes out to you Alice and all of Bill's family. I would like to express my deepest condolences-the world has lost a great humanitarian and will be missed. - Posted by: eric bechert (boyhood friend) on: Sep 16, 2019

  • My thoughts are with you Alice in this tragic loss of a tremendous wit, sense of humour and all round great person. Thoroughly enjoyed times spent with McGarv. He was a constant source of fun. We played in many a lunch hour(s) cribbage match and came sooo close to making millions 2 bits at a time. I'll never forget him sauntering in to the office, just a little late, wearing 1 black shoe, 1 brown and 1 heel noticeably higher than the other. I pointed this out but Bill. Just kept moving, with a small limp, like nothing was out of order. That was McGarv! - Posted by: Terry (Mex) Panchyshyn (friend, co-worker, cribbage partner) on: Sep 15, 2019
