MICHAEL DAVID HUSTON
July 27, 1972 - August 28, 2019
Mike will be deeply missed by his wife Sharlene; children, Rhylan and Madison; brother Jeff (Jenn); parents, Judy and Dave; mother-in-law Val; sister-in-law Laura (Dustin), brother-in-law James (Kari); and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mike grew up in Charleswood and attended Oak Park High School. Many lifelong friends were made through school, love of music, and sports, including baseball, biking, skateboarding and playing goalie for several championship hockey teams (Assiniboine Park Rangers, Charleswood Hawks).
Mike learned the importance of recycling at a young age and his career in waste management spanned nearly three decades. He was well respected in the industry. He truly loved his role as Plant Manager at Cascades Recovery and cherished the people he worked with. Mike was a generous soul, who recognized the best in people, and was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed.
Away from the office, Mike was a proud father, supporting Rhylan and Madi in their sports and activities. At home, he could often be found meticulously working on projects, or caring for his many plants around the pool, and spending time with family and friends.
Despite serious health challenges, Mike continued to travel and enjoy the activities he loved. He looked forward to travelling to warm destinations with his family, including a return to Cuba where he and Shar were married in 2004. Snowboard trips to the mountains with family and friends, including a trip to Lake Louise with Rhylan in April, brought him much joy.
Kind hearted and caring, Mike held his family and friends close to his heart. His great sense of humour, love of laughter and his infectious smile will be missed. He was taken too soon, but will live on in our hearts. We are grateful for the times spent with him and the example he set for others.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at CancerCare, Health Sciences Centre and Riverview Health Centre for their compassion and care.
A Celebration of Life for Mike will take place on Sunday, September 29 at 2:00 p.m. at TYC Event Centre, 1405 St Matthews Ave. Following a brief ceremony, light refreshments will be served.
Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Mike's name to Siloam Mission or a charity of your choice.

Hi Sharlene, I stepped on the foot of Mike Huston in the second week of July 2006 a year after my ugly arrival in Winnipeg from Nairobi, Kenya (Eastern Africa). On a serious note, I began working with him on August 28th, 2006 up till July 2008 before I took a break. I joined him again at Cascades Recovery Incorporation on May 12th, 2011 up to the last minute when the Lord God called him in His Kingdom. Through his incessant steadfast care and love for humanity, many of my dreams and that of others came true. With his endless support and guidance, I had been able to register with the University of Winnipeg where I am now majoring in International Development Studies (IDS), Literature in English and Academic Writing. Without the help of Mike, I wouldn't have yet gone this far, however, with my academic dream in the pipeline now, I am very optimistic that my world and that of those who near and beyond me would never be the same again. Thank you very much for all the needful you threw into my arms together with that of my family. Rest in peace until we meet again on His second coming. I’ve worked with Mike for approximately 8 years. He wasn’t just my boss, he became my good friend. So often we would talk and talk about the Jets or make fun of each other. I’d tell him "umm ok Mike you really need to work on your comedy." Then he would give me a look, then we laugh...never have I met a more genuine person, never a more generous soul. He was always there for anyone who needed to talk or a laugh...... Mike my dear friend/boss, thank you for everything you have shared, thank you for being there when I needed someone to talk to or just for being in my space when necessary....till we meet again and talk about all the concerts we enjoy going to and how your taste in most music sucked as I always told you, haha mike your in our hearts and thoughts......thanks for the light you became in our dark moments...this isn’t good bye this is see ya later...cheers my friend. - Posted by: Glen Wynant (Coworker ) on: Sep 27, 2019

Dear Sharlene, I'm sending condolences to you and your families/friends with the passing of Mike. One word to sum up Mike is "amazing"! When we first recruited Mike to be a "model" for our bedside ultrasound program & asked the first time if we could call on him again - his reaction was "of course - any time"! He will be missed by our Director and Proctors who taught our participants & who also got to know Mike. All I can add is how ironic that I sent out an appointment confirmation and you calling me to tell me this sad news. May sweet memories be yours to hold dear to your hearts! May you rest in peace Mike! - Posted by: Jan (UofM Ultrasound Program) on: Sep 17, 2019

I met Mike in 1995, he trained me as a supervisor for waste management which I'm still working in the same industry today and Mike's way was the right way. Mike was all about the people being fair and respectful. Mike's love for hockey and will miss talking about sports and life with him. His time with Emterra then Cascades, we always kept in touch. He will sadly be missed from all the people he touched in the waste and recycling industry. A great man that was taken way too early, he will be missed greatly. - Posted by: jason farski (Friend) on: Sep 07, 2019

This breaks my heart. Mike was a great man. Why? When I first met Mike I was looking for a Management position with Canadian Waste (Waste Management). Mike was at the helm and he was my junior in age. I told him that I had been in top positions before but did not want his job. I told him I wanted to work as a team. "And a team we were". As I worked with Mike at all three recycling plants in Winnipeg. When my Dad passed Mike knew I was broken. He covered for me by letting me have as much time as needed. Where do you find that in this world today. He was full of love and humour. I am proud to call him my little brother as I did, and a great friend. - Posted by: Darrell Ducharme (friend) on: Sep 07, 2019
