Our loving Mum and grandmother, Pauline, passed away peacefully, on Friday, September 13, 2019 at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre.
She was born July 24, 1933, in Kirchfidisch, Austria, daughter of the late Julius and Franzika Schaffer.
Pauline was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, John Ratz and sister Mitze Schaffer.
John and Pauline married in 1954 and soon after immigrated to Canada settling in Winnipeg. She was a wonderful homemaker devoted to her family. Pauline was an avid gardener, enjoyed a good meal with dessert and loved to get dressed up to go dancing. She regularly met with friends for coffee chats and going to church. Most of all she enjoyed the times she was able to spend with her children and grandchildren.
Pauline is survived by her sister Emilie Hochmann of Vienna, Austria; son Terry Ratz; grandson Maxwell Opdahl-Ratz; and Maxwell's mother Sherry Opdahl; all from Saskatoon. She is also survived by daughter Linda (Myron) Borys; and granddaughters, Christina and Stephanie all from Edmonton; and by son Brian (Jackie) Ratz of Winnipeg.
We also want to express our thanks to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit staff at the Health Sciences Centre and Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Services for their support, compassion and kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, September 20, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My parents Johanna and Ed had coffee with Pauline a few times a week. When I visit Winnipeg from Montreal I would join the coffee group, it was always a pleasure to see your Mother. She would greet us with her warm smile and tight hug. We are so sorry for your loss, our thoughts are with you at this time. • Our heartfelt condolences to Pauline’s entire family. This news is shocking as anytime we saw Pauline she was well put together and always had her wits about her. Pauline was a long time friend and always enjoyed chatting and sharing a laugh. Pauline was a special lady throughout our lives and was always there to talk to when in need. There were a few times over the years when life would throw a curve ball and Pauline would offer up a chair in her home along with a shot of apple brandy to warm your soul and take the edge off. It was always fun to get Pauline talking and there were many times she shared stories of her life, especially her love story of her beloved husband John. She was admired for her ability to always keep a spotless home and a beautiful garden! Just last summer of 2018 when my Sister and I dropped in unannounced, Pauline was out gardening and doing so in bare feet...loved that at her age! Pauline and our Mom had become close friends over the many years they lived on the same street and we are forever grateful that Pauline was with our Mom in her time of need. Pauline will be remembered for her sweet and giving nature, her ability to share her heart and for her giggle. We hope Pauline’s loved ones will find comfort in their memories and believe she has been reunited with loved ones that had gone before her. May she Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Donna (Turnbull) McAtasney (Family Friend) on: Sep 17, 2019
