GERALD RICHARD PRAWDZIK

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gerald Richard Prawdzik (Gerry) on Saturday, September 14, 2019, at the age of 79, at Health Sciences Centre, with his family at his side.
Left to mourn are Gerry's beloved wife, Ruth (Zahodnik); children, Betty-Jo (Shawn) and Ronald; cherished granddaughters, Jordyn, Milla, Neve, and step-granddaughter Leia. He was predeceased by his son Cameron.
Gerry was born on August 17, 1940, the middle son in a family of three brothers (Harold and Gordon) in the RM of Rosedale, MB to Alfred and Rose (Rainka) Prawdzik. He attended high school in Eden, MB, where he met his wife Ruth. They were married in 1962 (57 years). Gerry was a furniture salesman, leading the family to enjoy living in towns such as Melita and Grandview. Gerry and Ruth loved living in smaller communities where they developed many close, lasting friendships. After retiring in Beausejour, they moved back to Winnipeg where they continued to enjoy curling, golf, playing cards, gardening and square dancing. Over the years, Gerald has been an active member in the Roman Catholic Church and with the Knights of Columbus.
Gerald always loved a good joke. He loved to laugh and tell stories. They lived in different provinces, but he and his brothers were very close and spoke on the phone every day. He was a devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.
Thank you to CancerCare Manitoba for the support and care that they have provided over the last 15 years.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church, 135 John Forsyth Road, Winnipeg, MB. Following Mass and the luncheon, the family will proceed to the Beausejour Cemetery for the interment.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 1160-675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.

  • Ruth, my condolences to you and your your family. - Posted by: Phyllis Kallusky (Novalkowski) (Previous emplyee(Grandview Furniture) ) on: Sep 21, 2019

  • The first time my family and I met Ruth and Gerry we knew instantly how amazing and big hearted these two people are. They were our sponsors to come to Canada all the way back in 1996. My brother and I were 9 & 8 at the time and had only our baby sister and parents here. Little did we know that these two loving people would take us under their wing and help us with getting started in our new life. My only surviving grandparent was still living back in Bosnia and so we didn’t really have any grandparents anywhere close by. That is until Ruth and Gerry said they can be our “Canadian grandparents” and our relationship evolved from there. They were extremely caring and tried to show us what a normal life in this great country can be like. I still remember the first time we went to IMAX, when it was still in Portage Place, to watch the Nutcracker. It was amazing to me and they made it happen. We went to Rainbow Stage with Ruth and Gerry as well for the first time which was such a cool experience for a kid that just came from having nothing. Over the years we had family gatherings, Christmases, Easters etc. which were spent cementing this beautiful relationship. They got a kick out of my mom calling cabbage rolls “garbage rolls” one Christmas and that was always brought up throughout the years. As we grew older we didn’t get together as much but still kept in touch and saw each other during major Holidays. They ended up moving to Beausejour and we visited them there a few times too before they ended up back in the city. They always have the best intentions and it was no different when my brother and I started having children. Ruth and Gerry would always get them gifts, and come to celebrate them with us. Gerry was always in good spirits and was laughing at every chance he got. The last time I saw Gerry was a few months ago when they came to visit us due to my newest daughter being born. He was feeling under the weather, but for the most part was still the same Gerry. Trying to make the kids laugh and being a sweet man. Gerry you will always have a place in my heart right next to Ruth. You were a fantastic dad, grandpa and man in general. I wish you peace and hopefully we’ll see each other again some day. Ruth I love you and I pray you stay strong. - Posted by: Nick Konjicija (Grandson) on: Sep 20, 2019
