HELEN FRANCES MENSCH
(nee JOHNSTON)
Helen grew up in St. Vital on Elm Park Road in Winnipeg. She attended Windsor Elementary School and started her piano lessons as a young girl. She graduated from Glenlawn Collegiate where she developed her secretarial skills and was employed for 23 years at Ash Downs Wholesale Hardware in Winnipeg. During this time, she sang with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir which fostered her love of music.
On April 24, 1971 she was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) Mensch of Shellmouth, MB. Helen and Bob lived on their farm for 22 years raising cattle and grain farming until Bob's passing. During their years together they operated the R & H Farm Ltd., a grain and livestock trucking business.
In the fall of 1993, Helen retired to Russell, MB. She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church as organist, lector, church council, Evangelical Lutheran Women (ELW) and participated in many Bible study sessions. She was an avid reader of current events and the Royal family. In retirement, Helen travelled to many places but her favourite spot was her annual winter trip to Victoria, BC with her dear friend Nan Christie from Winnipeg. While a resident of the RPCH, she enjoyed many activities, especially the musical entertainment. A special tribute in her last few days was the Irish Cowboy from Winnipeg, coming to sing 'Oh Danny Boy' at her bedside.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Bob (1993), mother Eileen (nee Thompson) (1968), father George Johnston (1973), sister Nora (1934), brother Henry (Hank) (1999) and his wife Teresa (Terry) Johnston (2013) - Ottawa, father and mother-in-law Jack and Martha Mensch, sister-in-law Ruth and her husband Jerry Andres and their daughter Joyce, brothers-in-law, Art and Alvin Mensch.
She leaves to mourn extended Johnston and Thompson cousins across Canada and Ireland, her sisters-in-law, Angeline Mensch of Steinbach, Lois Mensch of Winnipeg and Doris and brother-in-law Gordon Mensch of Langenburg, SK. Also left to mourn her passing are one nephew, eight nieces and their families.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m. from the Grace Lutheran Church in Russell, MB with interment at Hoffenthal Cemetery north of Marchwell, SK.

I am saddened to learn that Helen Mensch has passed away. As mentioned in the obituary we enjoyed several years vacationing during the winter in Victoria, taking many bus trips around the island, and trying out restaurants around the city with the group. I think our favorite may have been the restaurant at the Legislative Building. We first got to know each other as singers in the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir when I drove her and others to the Concert Hall for rehearsals. After her marriage to Bob, I would drive out to the farm for visits. My condolences to the extended families, in particular Doris and Gordon Mensch and their daughters.
