CONCETTA (CONNIE) JOHNSON
CONCETTA (CONNIE) ULRICH
(nee CALIGUERE)

Our hearts are full of sadness as our family announces the peaceful passing of Concetta (Connie) (nee Caliguere) Johnson/Ulrich on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at the age of 89 years, after a brief battle with pneumonia.
Connie is survived by daughter Francina (Raymond), son Gordon (Kelly), granddaughter Chantal (Tyler), great-grandchildren, Londyn and Jakob, grandson William, granddaughter Stephanie, grandson Brandon, and their mother Mona, great-grandchild Benna, and her mother Shianna. Also cherishing Connie's memory are two sisters, Angie (Ron) and Antoinette (Ernie), brother-in-law Brian (Rochelle), stepchildren, Dale (Kelly), Siana, and several other in-laws, nieces, nephews, relatives, and many good friends.
Connie was predeceased by her first loving husband, of almost 35 years, William Harold Johnson, second loving husband, of almost three years, Rudolph Ludwig Ulrich, her parents, and siblings, Michael, Peter, Phyllis, Mary and Josephine.
Connie was born to Italian immigrant parents on February 22, 1930 in their home on Carlaw Avenue in Winnipeg, MB; she remained proud of her Italian heritage throughout her life. She enjoyed singing in canteens and on radio in her youth. She grew up in Fort Rouge, and then spent her adult life residing in Transcona, Gimli and St. Vital. Connie lived a long, full and meaningful life. With her husband Bill, Connie raised two children and took much pride in their academic, career, artistic, business and athletic achievements. As a widow and one who highly values family, she spent many precious, joyful moments with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and their extended families.
Connie began her career as a medical secretary for Physician and Coroner, Dr. Athol Gordon. It ceased when her children were born, but once they grew to adolescence, she returned to work for the doctors at Transcona Medical Clinic. When her husband was transferred to Gimli with the CNR, she worked in community health supporting adults with intellectual disabilities until her and Bill retired. She was a strong advocate for social inclusion, inspired by the teachings of Jean Vanier.
Connie loved music which always filled her homes. A woman of strong faith, Connie was a dedicated member of church choirs throughout her life. Her service to the church also included teaching Catechism, and range of other duties that supported the Catholic Woman's League and her parish priests and parishioners. Connie enjoyed participating in Bible studies, family times, arts activities, socializing with friends, reading, knitting, going to the lake, and travelling. She was fortunate enough to visit family and friends across North America. Her most exciting adventures took her to the United Arab Emirates to visit Brian and Rochelle, Italy with Rudy to explore her roots in Amato, Texas and Mexico with Bill to escape the winters, and Barbados to visit Tootsie and friend Fr. Pat.
A twice happily married woman, Connie will always be remembered as a kind, strong, and compassionate person who loved to laugh and joke. She was firm on living independently which she accomplished with the support of family and numerous friends at Kirchhoff Gardens, her home for the last 30 years. She taught us many life lessons, like how to forgive and forget, live your faith, serve others, and live in peace. We will all continue to benefit from how Connie showed us her pathway to living a long, flourishing life.
The memorial mass will take place at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 3, 2019 at St. Timothy Parish, 135 John Forsyth Rd. Celebrant will be Fr. Chrys Obinna Agu. Private interment at a later time.
The family offers their sincerest gratitude to the medical professionals at the Grace Hospital who provided Connie with a high level of care, and to our relatives and friends who responded with help and support.
Memorial donations can be made to L'Arche Winnipeg, 118 Regent Ave. E., Winnipeg, Manitoba R2C 0C1 (www.larchewinnipeg.org) or to the Grace Hospital Foundation (www.gracehospitalfoundation.ca).

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Francina & Gordon: We had the pleasure of knowing Connie when my mother Aila would come to visit from Kelowna. It was Mom, Connie and their friend Helen that would get together at our house, sit around the kitchen table, have a meal and catch up. Connie was a pistol and had a great sense of humour. We exchanged Christmas cards every year. Our deepest condolences to you all during this sad time. Kevin & Deb Guthrie - Posted by: Kevin & Deb Guthrie (Family Friend) on: Oct 07, 2019

  • My family Dawna, Kimberly and myself (Barry McParland ) enjoyed joking around and our time with Connie. We were in the choir together for many years. She was the true definition of Young at Heart and would refer to me in front of my wife Dawna as her Boyfriend. She really was very special. - Posted by: Barry Mc Parland (Friend) on: Oct 01, 2019
