ROSE MARIE FRANKLIN
(nee PASTULA)
September 29, 1932 - September 30, 2019

We, today, announce the passing of our mother Rose, after surviving a life-altering stroke in 2017 and having vascular dementia. She now is able to walk and have the cobwebs cleared from her thoughts on her new travels.
As Rose had planned so many years ago, she passed away in her home, with her son Bill by her side.

"Mom, it has been an honour and privilege
to assist you through the final stages of
your life."

Rose was predeceased by her husband John Franklin, of 49 years, and her companion Albert Hawryluk, of 14 years, her parents, Albina (Le) and Joseph (Joe) Pastula, brother Art, grandson David Franklin, and daughter-in-law Dale Frederick.
Rose is survived by her four children, Don (Denise) Ontario, Les, Manitoba, grandson Jeremy, Alberta, Kathy (Peter), British Columbia, and Bill (James) Maui.
Rose is also survived by in-laws, Betty Pastula, Marion, Edith, Joan and Evelyn Franklin, Michael (Florence) Franklin, Dorothy (Bud) Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rose was what you would have called a pioneering woman, who at the age of 19, met and married John and moved to a homestead in Belair, Manitoba with no running water or electricity. In her 20s she started having, and raising, four children and running a business.
Rose was the founder and owner of Lanky's, in Grand Marais, from 1956 until 1979 when she sold the business and retired. Retirement was not all that retiring though as Rose started the largest 4-H club in Manitoba at the time. She sat on the executive of various social and seniors' organizations including the Grand Marais Recreation Association and the Gordon Howard Centre in Selkirk. She was a volunteer coordinator for the House of Economy in Selkirk representing the Gordon Howard Centre. Whatever she took up, she put a lot into, winning provincial awards of excellence for her wood fibre flowers and her ceramics.
In her later years Rose and Albert, and after he passed, son Bill drove Mom to her beloved card games in East St. Paul, Beausejour, Garson, Selkirk and downstairs here at Edgewood Estates. The monthly supper club at Middlechurch was special for Mom. Rose was a social person and wanted to be out and about for as long as she could. Bill was able to take her out to different luncheons, suppers and her almost daily trips to Kildonan Park to see how the flowers were doing right up until recently.
When you get a diagnosis like this and make a decision to stay in your home until you pass, it takes a lot of people including various doctors, nurses, Family Managed Care, Palliative Care, health care aides, friends and for us, the help and support of the 6th floor gang at Edgewood.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to: The Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg; Santa to a Senior Program (one of Mom's favourites), Attention Bev McCallum.
In accordance with Rose's wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.
Honorary Pallbearers are Kathy Franklin, Albina Pastula (posthumously), Denise Franklin, Dale Frederick (posthumously), Marion Franklin, Susanne Sulkers, Pat Hayek, Mein Lowing (posthumously), Bernice Kolmatiski and Marci Mickey.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I offer my deepest condolences to her whole family members. Especially, to her ever devoted and loving son William ( Bill.) He gave her so much love, great support and comfort in her journey through her last years. How wonderful for both of them! She has now transitioned from death to life everlasting, incredible , peace and joy, free of pain and suffering. Her memory, lives on forever and ever, in the lives of those she touched. It is the way in which a person makes you feel, that is memorable! May she rest in peace. One worthy of being remembered! Blessings - Posted by: Marlene Wasnick (Friend) on: Oct 09, 2019

  • Rose was indeed a hard worker and her wood fibre flowers amazing. We stopped at Lankys just this summer but of course wasn't like it used to be!! - Posted by: Efie and Lilly Lowing (Friend) on: Oct 05, 2019

  • Rose and John were good friends with my mom and dad. I heard all the story's of the days in Belair and after she opened Lankys hot dog stand. She was a colorful lady, she could be very loud and tell you exactly what she was thinking. She didn't hold back and that's why I liked her so much, she was very smart and could figure out problems very easily on her own. My mom would and is very proud and happy that Rose made her a honorary pallbearer. They are all sitting around a table -John, Rose and my mom and dad talking and drinking coffee. R.I.P. Rose. • Peter thought of Rose as a sister and we both loved her dearly. Early on, she told him to marry me. I remember days at Lanky's and family dinners. - Posted by: Shannon. Smarz (Old friend) on: Oct 05, 2019
