HAROLD SMORDIN

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Harold, at the age of 92, on Thursday, October 24, 2019.
Harold is survived by his loving wife Selma and his adored children, Marcy (Rick), Susan (Arnold) and Jill (Ron), as well as his cherished grandchildren, James (Rebecca), Leigh (Nayyer), Deanna, Adrienne, Carly, Tara, Adam, and great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Ava, J.J. and Jacob. He was predeceased by his brothers, Shelby (Bunny) and Stan. He is left to be mourned by his sister Phyllis Adler, and sister-in-law Doris.
Harold was born in Winnipeg in 1926. He married his forever love, Selma, on December 28, 1954. They held hands for 64 years. Harold graduated as a Chartered Accountant in 1956 and proudly worked in private and public practice until his retirement in 1992.
Through Harold's kindness and generosity of spirit, his family always knew that they were loved. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always a delight to him and viewed him as a mentor. Harold appreciated all of the warm and special family moments together.
Harold was a long-time community volunteer and he modelled this value to his children. Harold and Selma were members of the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue for 55 years where he chaired the Cemetery Committee. He served as Vice President and Finance Chair on the Chesed Shel Emes Board. Even in retirement, volunteerism kept him busy. He served on the Finance Board of Creative Retirement Manitoba and volunteered with CESO (Canadian Executive Service Organization).
Harold was a man of integrity who lived an extraordinary life as one who valued family, education and community. He led by example.
Special thanks to the staff at the Simkin Centre who showed incredible care and compassion.
Donations may be sent to the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • My deepest sympathy to Selma and the family. I remember travelling from Montreal to Winnipeg with my parents Hy and Lil Heft when I was seven years old to attend Selma and Harold's wedding. I still have a photo of them on their honeymoon. Although distance and age separated us, Selma and Harold were always kind and good cousins to me, especially when my mom's health was failing. Harold was there for me when my mom passed away and was more than helpful in dealing with all of her accounting needs. I never received a bill and I have been waiting for 30 years. Although I never had the opportunity to get to know him well, I do know that he was a man who could serve as a model for goodness. May he rest in peace. • Dear Jill, Ron, Adam, Carly and Tara: I am so sorry for your loss. Though I only met your father/grandfather briefly, I feel like I understood what a great person he was from Jill's stories about her growing up, her dad's social group, his shared appreciation of the Winnipeg Jets and his devotion to his family. His love of his family and friends speaks to a life well lived. I wish you great strength during this time and many shared memories to reflect on. • We are so sad to hear that Harold has passed away. Fortunately for us, we have many treasured memories of time spent with Harold and Selma during our frequent trips to Winnipeg. He always made himself available to us and made us feel welcome. We both enjoyed his company and his dry sense of humor, not to mention his magic tricks! Selma was his soulmate, and they enjoyed so many wonderful years together. He will be missed by all who knew him. We send our condolences to the entire family.
