IONNA KATHREEN THIESSEN
February 28, 1948 - October 23, 2019

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ionna Thiessen in Eastman, Georgia, USA on October 23, 2019. She departed peacefully in her sleep after a long affliction with cancer.
Ionna was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and from an early age she developed a strong dedication to helping people. She was a life-long social worker, most specifically with the young, the elderly, and the incarcerated.
She met her future husband, Herman Davis and moved to Georgia, USA in the 1990s. Her love of travel and adventure was well known, with many trips to far-off places like Russia and Uzbekistan, and then in more recent years exploring parks and camping in North America.
She was a gifted textile artist with a love of good cooking and an unparalleled zest for life.
She leaves behind her husband of 20 years, Herman Davis, her daughter Lara McCabe, her mother Katherine Thiessen, brother Randy Thiessen (Linda), and her stepdaughter Brandy Brown (Larry), along with many other loved ones. She was predeceased by her father Richard Thiessen.
Donations can be made in her name to the Refugee Fund at First Mennonite Church, or to CancerCare Manitoba.
As per Ionna's wishes a cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held at First Mennonite Church in Winnipeg at a future date.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Condolences to Lara, Kathleen, Herman and family, Randy, Linda and family. I met Ionna while we were both working with troubled youth. Our relationship deepened as we entered graduate studies at the Faculty of Social Work. Ionna's kindness and wisdom were ever present as we faced both opportunities and challenges. I am profoundly aware that whenever we met over the years - her passion for caring for others, her commitment to justice remained as bright as ever, and grew even more. Her energy, her lively engagement remain my strongest impressions. She was gifted, and a gift to those privileged to have known her. I am sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Joyce Clouston (colleague) on: Nov 05, 2019

  • Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Kathy Thiessen and her family. Ioanna was always that wonderful daughter in Georgia. She will be greatly missed. May God's love comfort you in this time of grief. - Posted by: Jake and Margaret Kroeker (friends) on: Nov 05, 2019

  • Ionna, it was always a pleasure to be in your presence. I remember you as a happy person, enjoying life and the people around you. Thank you for your contribution of making our world a better, safer world to live in. You are missed by all who know you. I believe that life does not end here on earth but in death our soul is separated from our body and it is our soul which is who we really are that lives with God in His Kingdom. This is really Good News and the reason I write this in the present tense. Peace be with you Cousin until we meet again. - Posted by: Ron & Joan Stephens (Cousin) on: Nov 03, 2019

  • I will miss her terribly. She was one one of the kindest most giving people I know and was a positive role model for me. I aspired to always be more like her. She impacted my life in a positive way and I often told her so. Rest in peace Ionna. You're gardening and cutting the Creator's grass now. My condolences to Lara, Katharine and family. - Posted by: Donna Scull (Cousin ) on: Nov 02, 2019
