MARIA (RITA) MARCKER

Peacefully on October 30, 2019, at the Grace Hospital, Maria (Rita) Marcker passed away surrounded by her family.
She is predeceased by Clem, her husband of 53 years, and her son-in-law Gerry.
She is survived by her adoring children, Debbie, Monique (Bill), Derek; and her grandchildren, Matthew (Caitlynn), Andrew, William, Alexander, and Christopher.
In 1933, Rita was born into a large Catholic family in the Netherlands. At the age of 21, she immigrated to Canada to follow the love of her life, Clem.
Rita lived life to the fullest; entertaining friends, enjoying summers at the cottage, travelling, and cherishing her children and grandchildren. We have so many fond memories of our Mom playing board and card games at the cottage. Some of our favourite nights would be spent laughing and playing Old Maid.
Life is not without its challenges, but Rita used her wisdom and faith in the Lord to power through. We are very proud of how she advocated for her family and pioneered change in the public school system for students with special needs. Busy as she was, she was still able to maintain an impeccable sense of personal style, keep a clean and decorated home, and cook gourmet meals. Rita was also an accomplished seamstress who designed and sewed countless outfits. Age and illness did not stop her from keeping current with fashion trends and styles.
Her gregarious nature, along with an incredible sense of humour, created many precious friendships. She was the life of the party and made a lasting impression on everyone who met her.
Her strength, honesty, and influence will be with us forever. She instilled a sense of play and wonder in her children and grandchildren that will never be forgotten.
Our fondest memories will always be the hours laughing, talking and sharing stories with our Mom and Oma.
Thank you to Shannon Gray and all the wonderful home care staff who lovingly cared for our Mom. Our family is grateful for their contribution fulfilling our Mom's dream to remain in her home. Thank you to the nurses and doctors of Grace Hospital Emergency, who during the last hours of our Mom's life provided comfort and dignity. A special thank you to nurse Paul.
A private family service has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Rita's memory can be made to The Salvation Army or send a cheque to Changes Supported Living Services, in care of 390 Hampton St., Winnipeg, MB R3J 1P8.

  • Dear Debbie and Monique I am so sad to hear of your precious Mum passing 💔 as you know I met Rita at Grant Park swimming pool we were taking aqua exercise together. I couldn’t help but notice this lovely lady her hair and the stylish clothing she wore reminded me of my own Mum. I remember making a point of speaking with her and I’m so glad I did! Rita and I became fast friends her great sense of humour and honesty drew me to her. I loved going for lunch with her and sharing stories Rita’s first love was her Family her girls and her boy Dereck she talked non stop of how much she loved her family and appreciated how loving they were to her❤️Rita was so proud of her Grandkids and the time they spent with her at the cottage. I’m sorry I didn’t see Rita at the end I’ve asked her forgiveness 🙏I will miss you Lady💔I loved you Rita Rest In Peace my friend until we meet again💐❤️ Audrey xx - Posted by: Audrey Robertson (Friend) on: Feb 06, 2020

  • My sincerest sympathy to you Debbie, Monique, Derek, and grandchildren as you mourn the loss of your Mom and Oma. To you Debbie, I am so sorry to find that you have suffered the loss of your beloved husband Gerry as well. Rita was everything as written. Both Clem and Rita were beautiful loving people and a large part of my childhood. I was fortunate to be a fixture in their Transcona home, a guest at their cottage in it’s developing years, a tag along to many of their family outings, and a recipient of Rita’s sewing. She always walked with a bounce in her step. I would catch a glimpse always from our living room window on Newman as she headed down Bond to the Noe’s home. I was blessed to have the early part of my journey nurtured by extremely good and kind people. Lots of stories and lots of love. Time to say good bye but your hearts are full of what is required to sustain a physical loss. - Posted by: Lynn (MacIntyre) Gmiterek (Family Childhood Friend) on: Jan 03, 2020
