Emily Margaret Nett passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, in Winnipeg, on October 28, 2019, at the age of 95.
Emily was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 20, 1924, the first of Emily and Leo Westerkamm's two children. She grew up in Cincinnati and Norwood, Ohio, graduating from Norwood High School in 1942. She obtained her BA in 1946 from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, and then went on to take an MA in 1951 from the University of Washington (Seattle), and, in 1954, a Ph.D. in Sociology from Ohio State University (Columbus).
Emily married Roger Nett in 1954 and the marriage lasted until 1968. Dr. Emily Nett held academic and research positions in several universities including the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Institute of Technology, University of St. Thomas (Houston), Texas Southern University, and the University of Evansville (Indiana). She joined the Arts Faculty at the University of Manitoba in 1971, where she was made full professor and worked even after her retirement in 1990, continuing as Senior Scholar until 1996. Her curiosity and desire to understand and interpret the world remained with her until the end of her life.
Throughout her life, Emily was a lover of literature and the arts, especially classical music and the opera. She was a lifelong believer in social justice. Other interests included nature, travel and genealogy. She enjoyed entertaining and was an excellent cook. She kept a lovely home.
Emily is survived by her sister, Betty Jane Westerkamm of Mason, Ohio; daughters, Chewelah Nett (Bruce Fritchman), Erika Morin-Nett and Cristabel Nett; five grandchildren, Thomas and Helen Fritchman of Seattle, WA and Emilie (Matthew Warning), Charlotte and Edouard Morin-Fournier of Winnipeg; their father, Philippe Morin-Fournier; and extended friends and kin in many places.
Special thanks to Dr. Isabelle Paquin and the caregivers from Comforts of Home Care.
A celebration of Emily's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2019 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to any of our mother's favourite charities: the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Nature Conservancy, the Winnipeg Humane Society, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund or Ecojustice Canada.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I first met Emily in 1972 when I attended a YMCA where she gave a lecture series on the family! We met at the YMCA where my one-year-old son was looked after for an hour while I joined 10 or so other women for the talk and a discussion. It was my first step back into academe and I took meticulous notes! Later, I was delighted to be in a book group with Emily who always brought so much insight into the books we were discussing. My condolences to Cristabel (who was also part of the same book group) and all in the family. I will always think of Emily fondly! - Posted by: Phyllis Webster (Former student and book group member) on: Nov 10, 2019
