DALLAS STEVENSON
Dallas is survived by his beloved wife, Roma, of 47 years; his loving daughter Rhonda (Greg); brothers, Harvey (Debbie), Harry (Linda); sister Marilyn (Clayton); brothers-in-law, Gordon, Hector (Darlene); mother-in-law Lena, as well as extended family and close friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Bob and Verla; father-in-law Tud; and sister-in-law Avril.
Dallas was born in Oxbow, SK on April 12, 1952, and grew up on a farm in Carievale, SK. In 1969, he joined the Canadian Forces and was posted to 2PPCLI Winnipeg where he met and married Roma, and then was the proud father of his daughter Rhonda. While with 2PPCLI, Dallas did a six month peacekeeping tour in Cyprus. After leaving the Canadian Forces in 1974, he worked for 26 years at Domtar Packaging.
After family, Dallas' passion was fishing. He was a promotional and tournament angler and educator, promoting for AVO Marine, Lund, Honda Outboard, S.I.R., and Berkley, to name a few. He was a longtime member of the Manitoba Bass Anglers, had his own guiding business, and was co-owner of D&D Wavebreakers. Dallas loved to share his fishing knowledge, especially to kids, and volunteered to take kids fishing from groups such as the Girl Guides, Variety Club at Camp Brereton, Big Brothers, and Police and Pal. He volunteered at the yearly Outdoors Women weekend where he taught fishing techniques to women learning outdoor skills, including how to back up a trailer to launch a boat. Dallas was always lending advice, his time or a fishing rod to any kids and their families that he thought may benefit. Many a kid caught their first fish with Dallas, including his daughter Rhonda and his nieces and nephews, and he was as excited as they were.
Dallas guided throughout Manitoba and Northwest Ontario and could be seen regularly on the Red River, doing fly-in trips to Saddle Lake or spending summer holidays at Caddy Lake with his family and friends for over 40 years. He was a guide at Budd's Gunisao Lake Lodge, MB and lastly at Totem Resorts, Sioux Narrows, ON, where his beer and mustard fish shore lunch is legendary, until illness forced him to give up his passion in 2013.
Special thanks to the staff of Seven Oaks Hospital and especially the Dialysis Unit for the care provided to Dallas for the past six years.
At Dallas' request, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place and a private scattering of ashes will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Variety the Children's Charity, Variety's Camp Brereton, 440A Don Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0S4 or online at www.varietymanitoba.com/give.

Roma and family, Carolyn and I were so sad to hear of your loss. I can still remember Roma telling me stories of Dallas' exploits guiding fishing clients. Our thoughts are with you all. bjw - Posted by: Bruce and Carolyn Wakeham (Friend) on: Nov 26, 2019

Roma, Rhonda, Greg and family; I am so very sorry for your loss. Dallas was a larger than life character, and it was my pleasure to have met him. He always had a smile on his face, a joke on his lips and fishing on his mind! - Posted by: Michele Geiger-Wolf (Friend) on: Nov 25, 2019

Saddened at the loss of one of my all-time favourite friends and fishing buddies. Only my brother has fished with me more. Many trips to the Red River and Pine Falls, fishing tournaments, derbies, and trips to Bolton Lake and Saddle Lake as a customer. I was Dallas' doctor for a few years and have many fond memories of our times together especially trips to Pine Falls! We would take my Isuzu later in the season as Dallas' Suburban didn't have 4 wheel drive and it wouldn't get the boat up the icy ramp. As we got to the Perimeter (7 or 8 minutes out from starting) Dallas would start squirming and yelling "let me out let me out!!" in his special way because he had to have a smoke and I wouldn't let him smoke in my truck! Crossing the water at Pine Falls one time I sat in the bow facing backwards in my survival suit with the hood up and water would splash on us (AND FREEZE) as we hit each wave. When we got there and Dallas killed the motor he was nearly completely COVERED in ice and creaking loudly while chunks of ice fell off as he started to move from holding the tiller while he drove. We used to have to punch the ice out to get the live minnows we used as bait!! There are so many stories /adventures with Dallas I could write a book! Roma and family my condolences at your great loss! I will miss Dallas.... - Posted by: Dr Bill Clarke (Former doctor, fishing buddy, client , and friend) on: Nov 24, 2019

Well where does one start. I'm deeply saddened. Roma & Rhonda know this about your Husband / Dad. He deeply cared & loved you both. Even more than fishing. I spent a lot of non working time with Dallas & I have so many things that I could share about him. He did many things that nobody knows about. Here's one. We use to go to Nestor Falls to do our laundry & escape that evil place we worked at. In our travels we would drive thru a reservation. Sab is what its called by the locals. On this rez was a small convenience store which we always stopped at. Rez prices on "supplies" that Dallas would get. Occasionally there would be young kids hangin around which Dallas always made a point of talkin to. I never paid much attention to this the 1st couple of times witnessing it. However one time I did. Dallas, after seeing the kids, would go about his business in the store. The store owner knew him well. Dallas would discreetly give the storekeeper some extra $$ which he would use to purchase all the kids a ice cream or a pop or whatever treat they wanted. Not 1 kid there would go away without a treat or 2. If there was more kids than $$, Dallas who always "found" a way to be slow, would again discreetly make up the difference. Those savings on the "rez" prices. He spent on the kids. Every single time he stopped there. No kids around? No problem, he would still leave the $$. I'm not talkin bout a fin. Substantially more at times. On occasions even Ben would be involved. This was only a small part of who Dallas was & will always be to me. I will miss him. As I am sure many will. My condolences. - Posted by: Rob Carlson (Friend) on: Nov 24, 2019

My condolences Roma and Ronda, it's been very hard watching Dallas suffer these past yrs and watching Dallas not being able to do what he wanted especially fishing. It was new to me to be in business with Dallas and what he taught me. The respect and honesty to our customers. Dallas had a tremendous influence in teaching my wife and daughter in fishing and at the outdoor women's weekends on trailer back using. Dallas left the ladies and my wife Anne Marie continued in Dallas' footsteps, she loved that weekend. THANKS DALLAS, find Anne and enjoy things in heaven. Anne passed away Sept. 2014. Peace be with you all David Marshall D&D Wave Breakers - Posted by: David marshall (Business partner fishing partner and friend) on: Nov 23, 2019

Uncle Dallas was not just any uncle. He was the most generous, giving person you could imagine. He didn't have much but he gave so much. He was the type of guy that would give his shirt or his shoes if someone needed it. The type of guy who took kids with cancer out for a day of fishing on the lake just to see them smile. He was the type of guy who would feel so sick after dialysis but would stop at a store because he saw a unicorn mug and knew Ella would love it. He would be him, and he taught me to be kind and be myself even when people are not kind or nice to you. When I think of my Uncle Dallas, I think of how he taught me to fish and really created my love for the water. I remember how excited I would be when he pulled onto our street with his boat to take us cat fishing for the day or when we were at Caddy Lake and we knew we could go out with him through the tunnels or fish all week! He would tell us stories we had heard so many times but the way he told them you would still believe him. He taught me about nature, catching frogs and properly swinging a baseball bat. He would organize card games at the lake and invite every kid we would come across and oddly they would all come! He taught me how to swim by throwing me off the boat in the middle of the lake 😆. Uncle Dallas was a kids dream, the type of guy that would never not have a box of smarties in his pocket or a dollar to hand out to you when you saw him. The guy that would show up randomly to take you for ice cream, go-karting or even let you drive his truck in an empty parking lot. This guy taught me how to live life, how to have fun and to go do what you enjoy doing. I visited him the night before he passed away, he was very sick but still had that same Uncle Dallas personality. You couldn't break him. Unfortunately something bigger needed him. I will miss you Uncle Dallas but know that you had a huge impact on my life and I will never forget you for all that you taught me or did. I love you. - Posted by: Kyla (Niece) on: Nov 23, 2019

Hugs of love and comfort to the family and friends of Dallas. I will always remember the love and enthusiasm he had for our Variety Kids and in helping to make their camp and fishing, a time to remember. I still smile (and shudder) when I think of him teaching me and my boys how to unslime a leech. Rest in peace Dallas....you made the world a better place for so many.
