DOREEN MARGARET MCDONALD
November 18, 1933 - November 9, 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Doreen Margaret McDonald (nee Shade) after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Doreen was predeceased by her devoted husband, John Leslie McDonald; her grandson Kent; her parents, Richard Shade and Margaret (nee Smith) and Mike Phillips, her special fishing companion. She is survived by her four children, Brian (Veronica) in Sarnia, Brenda (Craig), Bradley (Cheryl) and Rob (Karina). She also has eight grandchildren, Matthew (Kate) in Sarnia, Breanna (Ziyaad) Gouda, Holland, Dailen (Sarnia) and Jeddore (Shelby) in Windsor, Ontario, Melissa (Daniel), Kaylyn, Ryan (Celina), Adam and two stepgrandchildren, Grant, Megan and five great-grandbabies, Lucas, Luke and Win of Sarnia and Landon and Kenton; plus a great-grandbaby expected in January.
A quiet but principled lady. Mom had such wit and charm about her. She won the distinction of "Most Gracious Smile Award" from the staff at Kiwanis. She retired from her job as a secretary with the Manitoba Teachers' Society in 1992. Doreen was an animal lover and loved sci-fi. She was a member of the St. James Art Club and did beautiful work in both oil and acrylic paintings. She was a founding member of St. James-Assiniboia Senior Centre. She had a passion for Genealogy and spent many hours doing research. She and Dad endured a family camping trip to Expo '67 Montreal with four young children. In her early years, Mom enjoyed weekends at the family cottage at Winnipeg Beach. She and Dad loved to travel.
Doreen was the rock of the family. She was interested in our lives, collecting pictures and memorabilia. She showed kindness, compassion and love to us all and said: "Life was good!"
She will be deeply missed and forever in our memories.
Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial service has been held.
Flowers gratefully declined. Please consider making a donation to CancerCare Manitoba.
The family wishes to thank staff and volunteers at CancerCare Manitoba, Grace Hospital, Deer Lodge Centre and St. Boniface Hospital (Palliative Care Unit) for the care and compassion she received in her final days. Also, the family wishes to thank the staff of Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts-Assisted Living.

  • My condolences to the family on the passing of Doreen. I worked with her at The Manitoba Teachers' Society for many years and we attended travelogues at the Concert Hall for a number of years. We kept in touch by email and phone when it became difficult for us to get together in other ways. I will always treasure our times together. - Posted by: Nan Christie (friend and co-worker) on: Nov 16, 2019

  • Doreen was quiet, but when she looked up with that beautiful smile, it warmed our hearts. No matter what she was going thru, the smile was there. She could encourage anyone with that outlook in life. - Posted by: Colleen GrahamNorth (Kiwanis Courts) on: Nov 16, 2019
