GERALD SMITH

Gerald Smith, aged 93, passed away peacefully in Calgary on Sunday, November 17, 2019.
Gerald was born and raised in Winnipeg having attended Greenway, General Wolfe and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute. On completion of his schooling he worked briefly for the Western Grain Company before joining CN Railway. With the exception of two years in the Army, Gerald remained with CN for 39 years before retiring in 1982. Gerald served in many Management positions in the Sleeping & Dining Car Department, Express, Passenger and Intermodal Services at several locations including Chicago, Toronto, Montreal and Saskatoon. In 1970 he returned to Winnipeg eventually retiring as Manager Intermodal Services. Shortly after retiring, he and his loving wife Lorna moved to Calgary to be near two of their children and their two granddaughters.
Left to mourn are his three children: Carol Ann (Dwight) Harley and their daughter Kathleen and her children, Merlin and Arthur; Kevin James (Eileen Klippert) and Kevin's daughter Christine all of Calgary; and their son Gary Robert of Winnipeg. Gerald was predeceased by his parents, John Ross and Jessie Smith, his infant son Jeffrey, and his loving wife of 56 years, Lorna Marie Smith (nee Wood).
Respecting his wishes, no services will be held. Cremation has taken place and interment will follow. He will be laid to rest in the family plot beside his loving wife and son in the Garden of Eternal Life, Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Winnipeg.
Thank you to Dr. Albuquerque, and the staff at the Colonel Belcher for the care they have provided to Dad.

  • So sorry Carol and family in the passing of your father. He was such a kind, gentle, humorous man. He was so kind to me and made me feel like a part of your family during my troubled teenage years. I was truly blessed to have known such a man....he will be missed by many but not forgotten.
